A Room of Her Own Annotations
Annotations: A Room of Her Own Brentley Patrick

#2: This annotation at first glance appears to me to be faulty in a sense. I agree with the fact that it flows from choppy “Ands” to smooth “Commas”. But is that all taking place in this sentence? The author could have applied the fact that all of her clothes were second hand yet this one she kept like it were brand new each time she wears it. Another foreshadow this casts is her situation. The sentence told me she was going to be poor. Why wasn’t this added to the annotation?
#20: This annotation reveals to me that unofficial means she didn’t want to believe her husband was truly gone at that point. I do agree with this annotation she’s so close to her late husband that it completely changed her attitude in the following sentences. She was darker in the face and she had a presence that indicated sadness.
#32: This annotation made me go back through the passage and see the prepositions. This was significant to me because I could go into deeper meaning of the object and as to why it’s important to her. I agree this annotation helped me move about the room and get a picture of what it was like.
#37: This annotation saying the broken dish was only her being sentimental want alone just that. This sentence told me prior to reading the annotation that she was a hoarder but a good kind. She treasured trash unlike the wealthier world with anything at their disposal. She lived in a homeless shelter and the broken dish is part of her minuet belongings.
#41: This is yet another annotation I slightly want to add things too. This marble sized gallstone killed “BIG JOHN.” I think it’s a symbol of a deeper meaning. A meaning of how something so minuscule can take something so big as life and how it can happen to anyone.
#43: This annotation tugs at me. I do not believe he was selfish I just think that’s all he knows because

The red pickle dish represents the Frome’s marriage. The pickle dish was a wedding present for Zeena and Ethan. Zeena considered it her most prized possession, storing it away at the top of the China cabinet. Just like the stored away dish, Ethan and Zeena’s love had been put away once married. The first night Zeena is gone; Mattie takes out the plate and uses it during dinner. By defying her sister’s wishes and using the dish, Mattie unintentionally defies Zeena and Ethan’s marriage. The breaking of the dish can represent different things. According to Ethan, the broken dish represents his broken dinner plans with Mattie. A night he was excited for ended up being an average night. The breaking of the dish, however, could also represent the breaking of Zeena and Ethan’s marriage, since it was a clear symbol of their marriage. The dish broke under the weight of Ethan and Mattie’s relationship. Ethan then attempts to hide the dish from Zeena, hiding the failure of their marriage and his feelings for Mattie. His deception failed when Zeena found the broken dish. The broken plate was basically dead to her, just like her marriage was dead. She cried at this discovery, showing her human side. Zeena seems to understand the symbolism of the dish, and she cries when she finally realizes the only thing left she loved in her marriage was broken. Instead of trying to fix the dish, Zeena only sulks over the remnants of the shattered plate. Like the plate, she does not attempt to fix her marriage either. The pickle dish becomes a clear symbol that the Frome marriage has failed under the relationship between Mattie and Ethan, and neither Ethan nor Zeena care to fix the broken marriage. Although upset, they both move on.…

Zeena received a pickle dish as a Wedding give when she was married to Ethan. “As he reached the door he met Zeena coming back into the room, her lips twitching with anger, a flush of excitement on her sallow face. The shawl had slipped from her shoulders and was dragging at her down-trodden heels, and in her hands she carried the fragments of the red glass pickle-dish.”(Wharton 1296). Zeena received that pickle dish as a wedding gift, so in a way it represented Ethan and Zeena’s marriage and love for each other so when the pickle dish broke so did their love and marriage. Her emotion surpasses any physical meaning the dish may have, so much so that other emotional meaning of the dish force themselves on the reader. Speaking to Mattie, she says, " ... you waited till my back was turned, and took the thing I set most store by of anything I've got, and wouldn't never use it, not even when the minister come to dinner, or Aunt Martha Pierce come over from Bettsbridge.... I tried to keep my things where you couldn't get at 'em—and now you've took from me the one I cared for most of all ….gathering up the bits of broken glass she went out of the room as if she carried a dead body…” (1326). The body she carries out is the corpse of her marriage. Wharton's illustration of symbolism through the pickle dish shows all the love Ethan and Zeena once had for each other and the broken marriage they now…

The Authors thoughtfulness is being built by the example she gives of when she explains in detail that Aunt Margret lays in bed and can't stop thinking about the eggs she had fifty years ago. "The thought of those scrambled eggs kept me awake at night. For fifty years, Margaret had held their taste in her memory." The intended audience for a passage of such thoughtfulness and tradition would be for married women who love to take care of people, especially through food. The kind of women that enjoy sticking to their food…
