A Summary of the Emperor's Club
William Hundert is an instructor at St. Benedict's School for Boys, an exclusive private academy on the East Coast. Hundert strongly believes moulding his students by using principles from Greek and Roman philosophers. The students here are the children of rich men. The purpose of the school is to mold them into leaders.
Hundert finds himself with a group of challenging students like a party-minded Fred Masoudi , an aintroverted Martin Blythe , an intelligent but mischievous Deepak Mehta , and rebellious Sedgewick Bell who is the son of a powerful politician. Bell always undermine Hundert opinions by questioning the importance of the material, flouting the school's rules, talking out of turn in class, and devoting as much time to his interest in girls as in his studies.
One day, the school is holding its annunal academic competition for the title of Mr. Julius Caesar (Emperor’s Club). Hundert sees a potential on Belll, and encourages him to take part in this competition. During the elimination round, Hundert changes the rules in scoring to favor Bell . At the final round Hundert figures out that Bell is cheating. Hundert did not expose Bell, instead changes the questions so that it's different from what he prepared, unluckily Bell doesn't know the answer, but another bright student does and he wins. Hundert is very disapponyed with Bell and they part ways.
Years after, the Hundert reunites with many of his old pupils. As a reunion event, they decide to have another Emperor's Club elimination. Bell, together with his son, who looks up to him, was there too and both Hundert and Bell meet again. They begin the Emperor's Club elimination again, but Hundert finds out that Bell is cheating again. Hundert confronts Bell inside the bathroom and Bell loses his temper, admits cheating and saying things like 'winning is all that counts,' no matter what you have to do. Hundert is very disappointed again. Without their knowledge, Bell’s son heard and saw their

Now everybody sees all of the Asian-Americans as an enemy and the Army makes them do the dirty work: dig trenches, set up barbed wire along the beach, and stand watch all night. After a couple of months they put the Asian-Americans on a remote island to do a special job. Eddy soon finds out that he is bait for the new K-9 experiment. A doctor comes to the assumption that the Japanese have a different odor than the Americans. The theme of disappearance in When the Emperor Was Divine encompasses both the obvious, such as their dog, and their father, and more complicated, subtle themes, such as the sense of community that they had with their neighborhood, and their worth as human beings as judged by other people. Their father as they knew him before his arrest was forever removed from their lives, due to whatever he suffered during his detainment. He was eventually released, and so, he was not removed from their lives entirely, but he was entirely changed, coming back a different person than he was when he was forced to leave his family. The most simple of the disappearances that are witnessed in the novel were the loss of the family’s pets. The mother had to kill their dog, release their bird, and give away the family cat, effectively permanently removing all of them from their lives. The loss of their dignity was a more subtle and complex disappearance, though just as prominent, and even more important. The way that they are treated before the war, and being taken to the camp, and the way they were treated by their community after returning are entirely different. Upon returning, they are either ignored entirely, or treated with hostility. Before having gone, there was a sense of community, and the mother had at least one close relationship with others in the community, in the form of the shopkeeper. Unfortunately, said relationship was one of the many that were changed or broken, due to the signified disappearance of their worth as American citizens, and as…

The insightful book, “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, there is a collection of evidence from various time periods. Looking in the past to analyze the current issues of today, is a tactic that is sometimes overlooked. Dr. Graves has stated, “In order to understand racial thinking in the western world, you have to understand the Christian Bible.” In chapter 1, “The Earliest Theories”, the previous statement was supported by Biblical, Greek, Roman, and Medieval concepts. As I read through the chapter, I critically analyzed the multiple claims and arguments.…

More so than I expected while reading Joseph Roth’s The Emperor’s Tomb was the extent that class divisions contributed to the cultural climate of pre-1914 Austria. While modern-day scholars may be interested in studying the rise of anti-Semitism, especially considering the rise of Nazi Germany in the aftermath of World War I, certain passages of The Emperor’s Tomb show that amongst the aristocratic intellectual elite, class divisions overcame anti-Semitic sentiment. Class divisions were engrained in cultural norms. Manes Reisinger, whom the narrator described as such a good friend that the narrator chose to change regiments so that they could be together, signed his letter to the narrator as “your obedient servant” (33). It is also undoubtable…
