Introduction Hello! If you have found this, this is a time capsule created in November of 2011 with the purpose of being opened after 100 years, that is, in 2111.
I am an average American with a wife, son, two cats and one dog. We live in a modest 3 bedroom house in a fairly small city in America. My day-to-day activities include going to work in a customer service call center, coming home to a nice family meal, and taking online college courses in addition to the necessary upkeep and repair on the house, yard, and automobiles.
Our customs are the same as many Americans. We value family. For example, there will be about 30 of us together on Thanksgiving Day, which is just a few days from now. We are an honest, hardworking people. My feelings about the present times are not very positive. The last several years have shown the United States its worst economy since the Great Depression, and we have yet to fully recover. Unemployment is high, and people are rallying in protest against the large banks and Wall Street firms. My hope for the future is that America will once again become the financial leader of the world, and be the best placed to live in the world again, with equal opportunity for all.
Morality Going into more detail about the current state of the nation, especially its financial state, I believe a severe lack of morality has contributed significantly to our current problems. The rich are getting richer, and the middle class are getting poorer. These are not the ideals on which this country was founded. Today, it is par for the course for a firm to sell you stock and other assets with “promise” of a high return, or at least low risk, only to find out they have taken out “insurance” for themselves if the deals go the other way in the form of derivatives and other financial safeguards only available to the rich. There is beginning to be no middle class at all; you are either rich or poor. Power. Greed.
