1. Plot:
The short story “A White Heron” by Sarah Orne Jewett focuses a girl named Sylvia who is initially a town girl lives with her grandmother in a farm. Every evening, she helps her grandmother to look after Mistress Moolly which is a cow. One evening, she is approached by a hunter who is searching for a white heron to shoot and preserve for his bird collection. Later, they go out to search for the white heron’s nest. In the end of the story, although she managed to find the bird’s nest, she did not reveal its location because she knows that the life of the white heron is worth than her love towards the hunter and 10 dollars reward.
2. Theme:
Self-Discovery
Sylvia has discovered her true self once she made a decision which comprises between her love, money and the life of the white heron. She chooses to keep the secret of the white heron’s nest location rather than to tell the hunter who had offered money and perhaps love for her. It is just for the sake of saving the white heron’s life as it is worth than her love and 10 dollars reward.
3. Characterization: Characterization is portrayed by Sarah Orne Jewett through third person point of view. The characterization can be vividly seen through dialogues and actions. The protagonist who is a girl named Sylvia is portrayed as a dynamic character because she has changed from someone who seeks for love and money to someone who cares more about the white heron rather than her own needs. Meanwhile, the man who is a hunter and an ornithologist is portrayed as a static character because he has not changed
