LEADERSHIP TRAITS
OF
DR.A.P.J ABDUL KALAM, FORMER PRESIDENT OF INDIA
SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT
* The spiritual inspiration and grooming of Dr Kalam commenced right in his early childhood. Dr. Kalam candidly declares, “ I asked my father about the relevance of prayer. My father told me there was nothing mysterious about prayer. Rather, prayer made possible a communion of the spirit between people. When you pray, you transcend your body and become part of the cosmos, which knows no division of health, age, caste or creed”.
* Dr Kalam says, “One of the important functions of prayer, I believe is to act as stimulus to creative ideas……… Prayer helps us to tap and develop these powers”.
* Dr Kalam has an intuitive rapport with humblest and simplest people, an indication of his own simplicity and innate spirituality.
* Dr Kalam says, “each individual has been created by God to fulfil a particular role. He (God) showered his grace on me through some outstanding teachers and colleagues …….(wings of fire)”.
* The spiritual enquiry of Dr Kalam continued even during his last year of degree course at MIT, Chennai. Dr Kalam says, “ I had to test my belief in God and see if it could fit into the matrix of scientific thinking. I wondered, was matter alone the ultimate reality and were spiritual phenomena but a manifestation of matter? Were all ethical values relative, and was sensory perception the only source of knowledge and truth?”. The value system in which he had been nurtured was profoundly religious. He had been taught that true reality lay beyond the material world in the spiritual realm and that knowledge could be obtained only through inner experience.
