Young gives examples of incidents where artists incorporate elements of other cultures in their artwork and receive backlash as a result. Weather it be a tribute, historically accurate or a harmless work of art it seems that artists are being accused of cultural appropriation as soon as they step out of their own cultural experience and immerse themselves into someone else's. Most artist then apologize and take down…

In the 1960s an art movement known as Pop Art had begun. Pop art was meant to be simple to aid the audience in creating their own interpretations of the pieces. Two of the leading artists were Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Warhol was a fan of women, unlike Warhol, Lichtenstein was inspired by culture; their paintings are both pieces of Pop Art but they are different because Warhol’s paintings are mostly of women and Lichtenstein’s are of famous cartoon characters. The artists used different techniques to catch their viewers attention. Both pieces of art displayed different messages to the viewer. Although both artists used Pop art, they had several differences in their artwork such as one being a real public figure while the other is a…

Everyone has his/her own personal views of art. Art surrounds our lives on a daily basis, and has been around since the beginning of time. There has been many famous artists throughout history including, Vincent Van Gogh, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Picasso. These people, along with others, sculpted the idea of visual art as we know it today. Art movements begin with an idea for a painting, followed by the process of putting that idea onto a canvas. Other artists see this painting and decide to “copy-cat” it.…
The period of the Civil War and Reconstruction, lasting from 1860-1877, the nation underwent a multitude of powerful changes, physically and emotionally. A school of thought today exists that, “The North won the war, bur the South won reconstruction.” What does this mean exactly? When the Union defeated the Confederacy, Northerners, freemen, and existing slaves imagined a political and social revolution in which their dreams of abolition and government power would manifest itself. However, the civil rights movement within the constitution, specifically the additions of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, brought to life the desires of the Union, but in the South such hostility and racism still existed that there was…
Due to these factors, Pop Art expressed a form of art different from traditional arts in terms of the process and materials used to produce the art, the subject that is drawn, and the different messages that are conveyed from the different art styles. Pop Art crossed the boundaries between “high” and “low” art forms and distinguished that not only certain art styles can be considered “fine” pieces of artworks. Pop Artists, such as Andy Warhol, experimented with new ways to create art and they helped pave the way for Pop Art to become popular. Pop Art based on and inspired by consumerism and mass-production captured the every day lifestyle of the people of America influenced by the mass media, making art more understandable and personal to the common people. Even though Pop Art was unaccepted and criticized by people at first, Pop Art is now and still is a popular art style used today in the designs of printed shirts using the mass-production…
Leonardo da Vinci. The Last Supper (after restoration).Leonardo’s “Last Supper” is a priceless piece of art with much hidden meaning and obvious talents bestowed upon a wall. is key in learning, but what is one to do when everybody teaches differently. Teachers must try to accommodate the need of every student, which is difficult because there are twenty or more students in every class with differing learning styles. Most people know how they learn, but some are still trying to figure out how to fully comprehend what they are learning.…
Cultural appropriation is often described as when somebody takes something of significance from a culture that is not their own without showing respect for what they have taken. While some people do this on purpose for personal gain, that being profit or just popularity, many may not even know what cultural appropriation is. Miley Cyrus has shown evidence that she either does not know about or does not care about cultural appropriation at her 2013 Video Music Awards performance on live television where she used black women’s bodies as sexual props, performed a song that she explicitly wanted to feel black, and degraded a vast population of black women in the process.…
When involved with life’s daily routines it seems as if time on earth will go on without end. Priorities become distorted, but vanitas paintings remind us that life’s journey has an end, and the things we concern ourselves with aren’t all that important when looking at the big picture of life and death. Although the mortality theme is in each vanitas, the artists express their meaning individually with use of color, iconography, and other artistic techniques. Two vanitas that are worth comparing are the Wheel of Fortune that was painted in 1977 by Audrey Flack and Vanitas, painted by Juan de Valdes in 1660.…

Evolutionary psychology is an approach in the social and natural sciences that studies the psychological behaviours and adaptations of humans to the changing physical and social environment. It’s basically a combination of evolutionary biology and cognitive psychology. In 1859, Charles Darwin set out his theory of evolution by natural selection as an explanation for adaptation and speciation. He believed that all plants and animals had evolved from a few common ancestors by means of natural selection. The theory is based on the assumption that living organisms face environmental challenges. This means that those who adapt best to the environment will have a greater chance of surviving, having children, and passing on their genes to the next…
