1. Native Americans in the “New World” a. bad omens- lightning struck temple, blazing lights in the sky b. BAMM! White people are on the shores :O big shocker (let’s just welcome them, forgetting all the bad omens) c. HERNAN CORTES------ 1519 ----- shows his beautiful face to the Indians (key event in the discovery of the New World) d. WHYY DID HE COME?
Well, in short, during the 1400-1500s in Europe, there was a lot of MONEY. (economy=better than it was before)
The big countries (France, England, Spain, and Portugal) were thirsty for domination in Europe.
e. How did the natives deal with these intruders?
They were familiar with the land and resources so they had an advantage
The government and religion provide structure
Established trade and warfare systems

2. Societies in the Americas
Just as populated as Europe around 70 million people
Different tribes with different languages, cultures, etc. they called themselves “the true men” also known as Indians to the Europeans (b/c of Columbus’s misconception)
Originally, people of motion
First people around 40,000 years ago from Siberia to S. America
Used a land bridge across the Bering Strait (from Ice Age, most water in glaciers=low sea levels)
Final migration 8,000 years ago to Alaska and N. Canada
Paleo- Indians = EARLIEST INDIANS
Small groups; ate mammoth, bison, etc. ; used spears
Experienced craftsmanship leads to overhunting and the extinction of many big game [9000 BC]
Extinction ALSO caused by climate change
CLIMATE: it starts getting warmer, grasslands=deserts, food supplies go DOWN
Animal food ↓ = Human food ↓
(will lead to permanent settlements)
ARCHAIC PERIOD [8000 BC-1500 BC]
Native population ↑, larger communities
Specialized roles ↑, men hunt and fish (traveling activities) and women gather pants and care for children (stay at home)
Tools made: fishhooks, arrowheads, bone needles, etc.
