Marriage in Biblical times was quite different than it is today. The requirements and limitations for marriage were different but still enforced during biblical times. Deuteronomy 25:5 states: “If brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband’s brother shall take her and marry her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her.” During these times it was the custom for brother in laws to marry their brother’s wife should he die. Although this was the custom then it is not the case now. The bible speaks of certain duties and responsibilities that apply to both the husband and wife. The wife is to be the caretaker of the household. Meaning that she is responsible for the upbringing of her children and making sure her guests are comfortable. The husband is to be the financial provider for his family. In this sense he must be able to put food on the table and make sure that his family is financially secure.
