|Legacy systems |Legacy systems are the existing IT systems, which include all hardware and software |
| |that a company uses. Legacy systems are usually maintained and upgraded by a company’s|
| |chief information officer (CIO), but the large IT companies that design these systems |
| |often offer custom systems, designed for the company purchasing them, as well as |
| |training in inputting data and proper use. |
|Mainframe computers |The mainframe computer is the grandfather of today’s computer systems. Mainframe |
| |computers often serve as the center of a company’s information storage and processing.|
| |All computer systems that came after, from word-processors to desktop personal |
| |computers (PCs), were birthed in attempts to simplify or progress the functions of the|
| |mainframe. The idea to connect secretaries and clerks to the mainframe through remote |
| |terminals, was probably the concept that later became the process of computer |
| |networking. |
|Microprocessors |Microprocessors were the first “computer in a chip”; that is that they could stand |
| |alone without being connected to a larger system. In
