Philosophy has been going on for generations; longer than people realized. Philosophy has been developing like humans thru time from ideas of metaphysics to theory of correct inference (Moore, p.14). One period of philosophy which grew exponentially philosophically was in the classical period. This period had some of the great philosophers of all time such as Plato, Socrates and finally Aristotle. In today’s world, new ideas about philosophy have arisen and classic philosophy has been a distant memory. So is classical philosophy suited/unsuited in today’s world?
So what is philosophy some would say? Well, “the word philosophy comes from the Greek philein, which means “to love,” and sophia, which means “knowledge” or “wisdom”” (Moore, p.2). Therefore, philosophy means to love wisdom or knowledge. This meaning of philosophy has lasted more than two thousand years (p.2). It is suited in today’s world because it is the official meaning of philosophy even today.
There are many philosophical questions out there and we ask them in an everyday basis. However, which questions are being asked today and which ones have been answered or unanswered? An example of a philosophical question is “Is there a God?” (Moore, p.3). Or what is God? This question has been asked for as long as humans remember. Now philosophers especially scientists are heading to a different view and asking different philosophical questions such as what is happening with the environment? What can we do to improve it? These questions are being asked today.
The Socratic method has been used for a long time even today (Moore, p.9). Philosophers back in the classical period have tried to find an understanding on some concepts such as truth, beauty, knowledge, justice, etc (Moore, p.9). Socrates developed a method for understanding these concepts (Moore, p.9). Here is an example of how it works, “You: You’re asking me what knowledge is? Well, when you believe something very
