Conventional Medicine Essay Example
Message body
In the present United States, if you need care or treatment for a sickness you have two options, the first option is conventional treatment and the second one is holistic treatment. The first factor to know when deciding between conventional or holistic treatment is to know the differences between the two treatments.

Conventional medicine has pros and cons just like any other topic. Conventional medicine has the best medicine in surgeries or trauma care but in the treatment of immune related issues, it depends upon prescribing drugs and harmful medical procedures. Conventional medicine only heals the symptoms of the disease or disorder; it won’t treat the hidden causes like holistic medicine. It cures your body in pieces; it will never cure it as a whole. The way the Conventional medical doctors think is based upon the usage of “rescue medicine”, they don’t find the prevention atlternatives for illnesses and diseases.

On the other hand, holistic medicine is not only prevention-based but also does medical treatment by concentrating on proactive ways to treat a person. In a nutshell, holistic medicine treats the condition, not the symptoms. So since holistic medicine treats the body as a whole, it’s cost effective.

People may wonder why people don’t use holistic medicine more if its more cost effective, but holistic medicine’s stronghold isn’t exactly treating acute and life-threatening illness and injuries. While conventional medicine excels at treating acute and life-threatening illness and injuries. So if we have a heart attack, broken bones suffer from infections, or we urgently need a cancerous tumor removed for example, conventional medicine is best, because it is excellent at diagnosis of the big injuries
So if we switch over to holistic medicine, we wont be able to treat life-threatening injuries, which would be catastrophic. Also conventional medicine has proven repeatedly that it is reliable.

Positivism in medicine restricts the medical methods being used to the idea that all ailments are objective and quantifiable, and any subjective elements are not useful (Lyng 1990:10). This restriction limits to the healing only of the physical body and the mind, with the mind regarded as being on a spectrum of what the human mind is capable of with chemical imbalances and neurological pathways being disturbed. Holism sees the body and mind as a continuum of the whole individual and this makes it difficult to try to treat one while ignoring the other (Lyng 1990:78), which can be both a pro and a con for treatment depending on the circumstances presented. Both biomedicine and holistic medicine have their advantages and disadvantages, but holistic medicine is starting to become integrated into our highly biomedical society in the West more and…

One of the eight basic principles of holistic health care is that health requires an integration of mind, body and spirit. This idea is present in meditation and research suggests that those who meditate are healthier, especially in regard to stress induced illnesses. Western medicine could also benefit from the idea that the individual must affirm personal responsibility for their own health. Too often in our society people don't want to change the habits that are making them unhealthy. Another principle that could provide benefit to western medicine is the idea that disease is a process and provides an opportunity for personal growth.
