The article “The Changing Face of the American Family” by Tim Stanley focused on the topic of how the American family has changed in the past century. Stanley discusses the “nuclear family,” which is a family centered around two parents. The nuclear family was forged by the unique economic and political circumstances of the 1950’s, was undermined by social revolution in the 1960’s and was revived as an ideal family in the 1970’s due to the deceptively rosy view of the past (Stanley 11). The idea of the “nuclear family” is still considered by some to be the ideal family and the promise of the American dream.…
In Andrew Cherlin’s “Demographic Trends in the United States: A Review of Research in the 2000s”, there are various topics discussed regarding why the structure of family life is changing. The topics that were used for research were Marriage, Divorce, Fertility, Cohabitation, Same-sex unions, Children’s living arrangements, living apart together, early adulthood, immigration, and aging. Throughout the years there have been obvious changes in the previously presented topics that would lead to different patterns of family life structures. There was once a linear progression that everyone followed, and it just doesn’t seem to be the same anymore. Deviations that appear in ones path lead to their conventional life cycle running differently. There were a few of the discussed topics that had a huge impact on the research that was being conducted.…

According to surveys of the college students in the 1920s, the young believed that marriage should end in divorce if their marital relationship did not fulfill their expectations. A revolution has taken place in family life since the late 1960s. Today, two-thirds of all married women with children--and an even higher proportion of single mothers--work outside the home, compared to just 16 percent in 1950. Half of all marriages end in divorce--twice the rate in 1966 and three times the rate in 1950. Three children in ten are born out of wedlock. Over a quarter of all children now live with only one parent and fewer than half of live with both their biological mother and father. Meanwhile, the proportion of women who remain unmarried and childless has reached a record high; fully twenty percent of women between the ages of 30 and 34 have not married and over a quarter have had no children, compared to six and eight percent, respectively, in 1970.…
In the recent decades, the worldwide shark population has experienced a drastic decline. This is a result of the over-hunting of sharks for their fins. Shark finning- the practice of catching a shark and removing its fins from the rest of its carcass- has become more common as the shark fin trade continues to grow. Sharks are currently being hunted at a much faster rate than they can reproduce, and if the hunting is not stopped, it will lead to their extinction. Despite its cultural significance and the economic benefits that can be gained from it, this trade must be discontinued to prevent the extinction of sharks.…
The traditional family structure in the United States is used to be considered as a family support system involving two married people providing care for their family. However, the traditional family structure has become less common as we head into the 21th century. The changes among families in America has shifted to very powerful changes, including divorce and single-parent families, teenage pregnancy, and same-sex marriage, and increased rate of adoption. Social movements such as advanced technology, longer life spans, the freedom of increasing the use of birth control, women’s increasing engagement into the workforce, and a dramatic increase in divorce rates have restructured the American family’s life nowadays.…
The patterns of marriage, divorce and cohabitation over the past 40 years has varied quite significantly. In 1972, the highest ever number of couples (480,000) since the Second World War got married. Now, obviously there is a reason for this. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), this was due to the baby boom generation of the 1950s reaching marriageable age and these people choosing to marry at a younger age compared with previous generations.…
The average number of marriages has declined since the 1950’s for various reasons that scholars have tried to explain through their research (Vanorman & Scommegna, 2016). Even with the legalization of same sex marriage, there has been a decline in the number of married adults in the United States. In 1960, about three-quarters of all American adults were married, compared to 2014 where the number had decreased to about half of all American adults being married (Vanorman & Scommegna, 2016). The United States’s marriage trend has been influenced by factors such as cohabitation, delayed marriage, an increase in divorce with a decrease in remarriage, and the increase of having children out of wedlock (Vanorman & Scommegna, 2016).…
