Your preferred ethical lens
Your blind spot

Over the past few years I have been in the ‘finding myself’ phase. I have always been a person to be analytical and constantly working things through in my head. As of recent, I have been meaning to find purpose and meaning for all things humane. I would guess in the pursuit of happiness as they say. I often find myself wanting to reach out and see what I can do in my own pursuit to help others along the way. After taking the Ethical Lens game I can most definitely identify myself with the Rights and Responsibility lens.
At a young age, I was attracted to my neighborhood church. I remember waking up to dress and walk myself there, to be around others in the community coming together for united purposes. After reading this specific lens focuses its ideals as said ‘through Nature or given by God’ as the way for man kind to strive to abide. A secondary value of this lens is loyalty. Nowadays, I find myself having to think about how far one should take loyalty. I have been in many debates on fairness to others. Defending friendships or family to the point where I’ve lost a few friendships from debating what I thought was right in a situation and came off too strong.
That point leads to my blind spot, which was identified in this exercise as the ‘Belief that motive justifies method’. Looking back I can agree that I have hurt people unintentionally with what I thought was fair but being too pushy or as said in the inventory, having the risk of being too bossy. The Ethical Lens Inventory supports Equality and Sensibility as my core values. The results describes that I “prioritize the value of equality over autonomy” (ELI inventory). In addition, it indicates the well being of the community as my primary concern as the “best way to assure that individuals are treated fairly” (ELI inventory). The explanations of these core values reassure my conviction that one-size-fits all approach isn’t the best way to find solutions, but rather the best results are achieved by examining each situation in its context. In other words, I prioritize the value of sensibility over rationality.…

The ethical lens inventory exercise is very useful and something that I have lost sight of over the years. I was first introduced to this concept when I first applied for a sales position over a decade ago. After completing the exercise, the results of my answers places me in the Rights and Responsibility Lens. Since no one is perfect, having blind spots is inevitable, my blind spot as a result of my answers states that "belief that motive justifies method." My strengths are reason and self knowledge, whereas my weakness is becoming judgmental and legalistic.…

Benjamin Disraeli once said, “Circumstances are beyond the control of man; but his conduct is in his own power” in Contarini Fleming, 1832. What this quote is means is that there certain situations we can’t control, however we can control our actions and how we deal with the situation. This quote can be proven true in both, the play the Crucible by Arthur Miller and the book Night by Elie Wiesel. In the Crucible, John Proctor learns to deal with the Salem Witch Trials and in Night, Elie has to deal with the Holocaust.…

Fyodor Dostrevsky said, “Fear is simply the consequence of every lie.” This quote means that you aren’t afraid of the action you made but you’re scared of the action that are going to be made toward you as a punishment. This quote agreeable because a lot of the time when a person lies there thinking right then an there, the fear of what’s going to happen to you when the truth comes out is what punishes you the most not the actual consequence it’s self. Fyodor Dostrevskys quote is evident in All-night Part by R.L.Stine and The Crucible by Arthur Miller because in each wok of literature they all have to face the consequences of lying and the fear of their punishment.…

J.F. Clarke once said, “The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience.” I think that what Clarke meant is that people who listen to their heart, people who do what they know or believe to be right, even if everyone else is or would be against them for it, are the bravest people of all. I agree with this quote because it’s usually hard to do the right thing, especially if one has no support. Two books that show this are Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and Lightning by Dean Koontz.…
