experiment 5 ionic reactions
PURPOSE: To see which solutions are soluble and which are not. We were able to see this by mixing certain solutions together and observing changes that occurred.
PROCEDURE:
1 Cotton Swabs, 1 Sheet each of white and black paper, 1 Distilled water, Goggles-Safety, 1 Well-Plate-24,1 Well-Plate-96, Bag-CK1 1 Pipet, Empty Short Stem, Experiment Bag Ionic Reactions 1 Barium Nitrate, 0.1 M - 2 mL in Pipet, 1 Cobalt (II) Nitrate, 0.1 M - 2 mL in Pipet1 Copper (II) Nitrate, 0.1 M - 2 mL in Pipet, 1 Iron (III) Nitrate, 0.1 M - 2.5 mL in Pipet, 1 Nickel (II) Nitrate, 0.1 M - 2 mL in Pipet, 1 Sodium Bicarbonate, 0.1 M - 2 mL in, Pipet, 1 Sodium Carbonate, 0.1 M - 2 mL in Pipet, 1 Sodium Chloride, 0.1 M - 2.5 mL in Pipet, 1 Sodium Hydroxide, 0.1 M - 2 mL in Pipet, 1 Sodium Iodide, 0.1 M - 2.5 mL in Pipet, 1 Sodium Phosphate, 0.1 M - 2 mL in Pipet,1 Sodium Sulfate, 0.1 M - 2.5 mL in Pipet
CAUTION! Sodium hydroxide is caustic and can burn skin and clothes if it touches them.
Rinse any spills well with copious amounts of water. Also, most of these chemicals are toxic by ingestion. So remember, no food or drinks in the lab!
1. All reactions will be performed in the 96-well plate.
a. Place 2 drops of cobalt (II) nitrate solution into seven of the A row wells.
b. Place 2 drops of copper (II) nitrate into seven of the B wells.
c. Place 2 drops of iron (III) nitrate into seven of the C wells.
d. Place 2 drops of barium nitrate into seven of the D wells.
e. Place 2 drops of nickel (II) nitrate into seven of the E wells.
2. When performing the following, NEVER TOUCH THE TIP OF THE PIPET TO THE SOLUTION
ALREADY IN THE WELL!
a. Place 2 drops of sodium phosphate solution into five vertical wells under column number
1.
b. Place 2 drops of sodium iodide solution into five vertical wells under 2.
c. Place 2 drops of sodium sulfate solution into five vertical wells under 3.
d. Place 2 drops of sodium chloride solution into five vertical wells under 4.

Our results seemed to largely agree with the established solubility rules/table; however, a few reactions with the commonality of being mixed with Co(NO3)2 (cobalt nitrate) [reference Row A, Columns 2, 3, and 4] seemed to have such a pale pink tone that it was difficult to decide whether that could have been a precipitate or the lighting in the area where the experiment took place. Ultimately, our lab group came to the decision that no reaction occurred.…

Determine whether an ionic double replacement reaction has occurred. If I place different amounts of ionic solutions in a well plate, then I will be able to determine which of the solutions has had an ionic double reaction placement because I will use the solubility rules to decide which product produced the solid precipitate.Place five drops of silver nitrate into well A1 through A4. Place five drops of Iron (III) Nitrate into rows B1 through B4. Place 5 drops of copper (III) nitrate into rows C1 through C4. Now you will place four different ionic solutions in each column 1 through 4. Place five drops of Potassium Iodide in column 1A, 1B and 1C. Place five drops of sodium sulfate in column 2A, 2B, and 2C. Place five drops of sodium hydroxide in column 3A, 3B, and 3C. Place five drops of sodium chloride in column 4A, 4B, and 4C. Record the color of a precipitate that has formed in the data table and “NR” if no precipitate has formed showing no sign of a reaction.Add a little water to each well and turn the well plate over on a paper towel. Throw the towel away and clean the plate. 1. H2CO3. 2. CaCl2 (aq), H2CO3 (s). 3. Sodium Carbonate aqueous plus hydrogen Chloride aqueous yields Sodium Chloride plus Hydrogen Carbonate. 4. Well…

In our experiment we were given 5 different cations who’s mixture of anions ranged from five to three different solutions. At every single station we were given the following materials a spot plate, a dropper, and the chemicals used to mix with our main substance. Each substance received 3 drops of the different chemicals which were able to give us an observation of what the compound was made into. Many of our experiments color, texture and solubility changed because of the properties that came from the other solution.…
