Part 1: Population Pyramid Analysis
b) Based on the percentages from the chart, First Nations’ dependency load is 39% compared to Canada’s dependency load of 25%. The First Nations has a higher dependency load because more of their population is under the working age. The percent of children in First Nations is almost two and a half times higher than Canada. The percentage of working class and older adults is roughly the same for First Nations and the rest of Canada.
c) Canada is currently in stage 3 of population change. Canada is in stage 3 because there is a low birth rate. As seen in figure 16-11 on page 195, the death rate in Canada declined until 1966 and then it has remained fairly constant. The birth rate has continued to decrease since 1960. First Nations is in stage 2 because they have a higher birth rate and a death rate that has declined at a rate similar to the rest of Canada.
d) Canada now needs more infrastructures to allow for businesses to grow. The government should also save money and plan for the future when we have a higher dependency load. In the future, as Canada’s population gets older, we will require more health care and more services for seniors like housing and transportation. First Nations now need more schools because of the high number of young people. They also need access to childcare in order for the parents to be able to stay working. In the future they will need more jobs, universities, and housing. Any services the government can provide which will help find jobs will be needed when this large young population becomes part of the work force.
Part 2: Graph Construction and Analysis

1. Based on the data presented in the bar graphs I have come to the conclusion that the quality of life is higher in Canada than the First Nations population. Canada’s non-aboriginal population is healthier, more educated and wealthier. Based on
