GKE Task 3
Britain utilized three strategies in order gain their rise to power in the colonization in Nigeria. Colonialism, “is the act of moving a significant number of citizens from a home nation into a new conquered territory”. As aforementioned they successfully did so by three means, one is by coordinating treaties. Seizing power and gaining control, British successful established treaties with the chiefs of the Niger Delta, which ultimately allowed them to proclaim the central and eastern coast of Nigeria as protected land by the British, ultimately granting them power to control the oil in that area. This in turn led to large European merchants coming over to partake in the palm oil industry, ultimately leading to the British enslaving the Nigerian people in order to produce the oil and demonstrate their power over them. Not only were the British exerting power, but their influence had grown as the Church of England’s Church Missionary Society promoted their own health care and education, which demonstrates another tactic of the British to colonize Nigeria, by means of converting Nigerians to Christians (Soomo, 2013). The people of Nigeria, however, did not comply willingly. They continued to flex resistance until their freedom from British rule was gained. However, through punishment of the law, those who resisted were forced to build houses for colonial officers, roads to be able to move trading goods from Nigeria to Western parts, and rebellious men were either surrendered by chiefs or given monetary punishments in an attempt to keep Nigerian rebels at bay. Despite using inferior firepower and weaponry, Nigerians resisted by means of violence, refusing to sign treaties and negotiation. Smaller wars and guerilla warfare became the tactic of Nigerian rebel groups. The Ekumeku, a rebel force operating under no specific authority figure, met secretly in different locations to devise a plan of attack in order to rid their people of dominance under British rule, and when

Elasticity of Demand pertains to the relationship of price and need of a product. If a price increases will the demand increase or decrease? When a demand is elastic, it means even a small change in price can cause a large change in the quantities consumers purchase. (McConnell, pg. 77) So for example in an elastic demand if you reduce the price of a good the demand will increase a large amount and revenue then increases. When the is inelastic, according to McConnell it means when there is a price change it only causes a small change in the amounts consumer purchase. This can result in less total revenue. If a company drops the price of something, even if they sell more it doesn’t mean they will make more overall. If it is inelastic, the revenue can drop. There is also something called perfectly inelastic, which means and change in price results in absolutely no change in demand. This is rare and an extreme situation. There is also demand in unit elastic which “demands occurs where a percentage change in price and the resulting percentage change in quantity demanded are the same”. (McConnell, pg. 77)…

For one to be able to do justice to a question of this nature, it would be better if one is at latitude to write without a constraint. However, going by given benchmark an attempt would be made to achieve this. Historically, the country Nigeria came about due largely to the merchant activities of the British traders whom in their quest for larger market, raw materials and the need to exert political influence overseas led them to kick start a project that resorted into a birth of what today is known and called Nigeria. Before this, there were series of activities of leaders of various organized communities like that of the Igbos, Ibibios, Hausa/Fulani and Yoruba as well as the advent of the colonialist and the amalgamation of protectorates, constitutional development cum nationalist movement which majorly facilitated the formation of Nigeria as well as the subsequent grant of independence.…
