GS1140 Unit 1 Research Paper 1: Paradigm Shift
The “Pentium flaw” or the Pentium FDIV bug was when Intel released defective Pentium processors. The defect was malfunctioning P5 Pentium floating point unit causing the computer to calculate division incorrectly. The “bug” was discovered by Professor Thomas Nicely when working on mathematical equations and noticed many inconsistencies in his calculations when he added a Pentium based computer on June, 13, 1994. Intel tried to keep the bug out of the lime light while they worked on updates to try and fix the problem but, persistent consumers kept pushing the issue on the internet and in magazines. In my opinion Intel handled the defect poorly and should have admitted up to the problem and replaced the defected processors when they had reports of issues from the Pentium processor. Even if the number of defected processors was low some sort of plan should have been in place when users were starting to complain. Only after a report from CNN on November, 21, 1994 did Intel offer to replace the Pentium processor if the consumer could prove there processor had the “bug”. But the damage from the media was already done and the public felt betrayed for Intel’s slow response. Intel final did offer full replacements for the defected processor on December, 20, 1994. The financial loss was heavy and Intel reported 475 million dollars in loss by the end of 1994. Today I’m sure Intel has learned from its mistakes and would handle the situation differently today. Intel would probably replace any defective processor and would react quicker to a widespread problem when they see it occur. And if Intel competition sees a similar problem they will be able to look back at Intel’s mistakes and be able to implement a different solution.

The flaw was first discovered in June 1994, when Intel engineers first noticed that the floating-point unit (FPU) on the chip gave the wrong answer. However future tests done by Intel showed that the error appeared only in the ninth significant digit of the answer and affected a very, very small percentage of possible division combinations. The results of this flaw…

While there are many types of hindering perceptual blocks Adam’s breaks it down to easily understood issues. The first issue is stereotyping. While many people throw away mailing boxes as trash, others with imagination can turn those same boxes into trains, planes, houses, etc. Next issue is limiting a problem unnecessarily. An example of this would be when I was told I needed three routes on my bus due to how the routes had been established. I found a way to reroute so that it only took two trips. Finally, saturation and informed overload is the last perceptual problem. When I worked in pest control a company thought they had a rat problem. They even flew in an expert in order to deal with the pests. In the end, the problem was found to be bullfrogs.…

A processor manufacturing company who are currently facing financial troubles completed an order about three months ago for newly designed high-powered processors that are smaller than and four times as powerful as its predecessor. These processors are to be placed into cutting edge cellular phones by a leading cellular phone manufacturer whose release date is a mere month away. A design inconsistency was recently discovered that essentially meant that the processors would work but would be no more powerful than its predecessor in certain conditions. A flaw that would only to be discerned when extraordinary load was placed on the device component whilst it was exposed to ambient temperatures of over 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The company’s CEO is now faced with the difficult decision of either doing nothing or replacing all the processors.…

Around the same time Intel developers began working on the 4004, they also began work on the 1201 project for Computer Terminal Corporation (CTC). The 1201 was intended to be a single metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) chip that would replace a similar processor designed using medium-scale-integration components. The 1201 was later renamed the Intel 8008. The 8008 was the first 8-bit microprocessor and laid the foundation for future microprocessor from Intel. The 8008 was designed in 10-micron PMOS (metal-oxide semiconductor using p-type transistors) technology, and required approximately 3,500 transistors. The die for the 8008 measured 4.9mm, 3.67mm. The 8008 was packaged in an 18-pin dual inline package, ran at 200 kHz, and was capable of 60,000 instructions per second. While the 8008 was being developed, a June 1971 Texas instruments (TI) advertisement in Electronics magazine showing a “Computer On A Chip” revealed that CTC had also contracted with TI to produce a chip similar to the 8008. This presented a difficult…
