- History o When/Where/Why did things take place?
- Middle Ages + Romans divided Day into 2 12 hour periods. o Day and night o Equinox: Means periods are almost the same. o In January, the further north you are, the longer the nights. o Prime – first hour o Terce – Third hour o Sext o Nones
- Scientific method for time o Merchant time, clock time o Uses a mechanical clock o Towards the end of the Middle Ages o Every 12 hours, there is a sound of some sort
- The week is governed by the moon o 4 weeks = month o 7 phases of the moon
- Most people tell time by feast days
- Also used kings to tell what year it was – Year of King Louis
- Anno Domini, Before Christ
- People had to be careful where they planted crops and where they built settlements o Did it based on water sources o Where your big buildings are is where your heart is
- Learn about geography o Every river flows downhill o You can find mountains on a map with only rivers
- History is about the actions and passion that take place in the meeting of place and time.

- There are three acts in the figurative Middle Age “Opera” o 1-500: Roman Act o 500-1000: Barbarian Act o 1000-1500: Christian Act
- People never thought of discarding old concepts and technologies
- All three acts intertwined with each other
- Each act has a high point or climax after starting peacefully
- The Roman Empire is generally everywhere where olives grow o Medit
- Cities are crucial to Rome o Disappear in Act 2 o Cradle of civ
• Citizens o Barbarians are barbaric don't like cities o Capitalines, Bath houses, temple, forums, public games, etc… are the important buildings o At the beginning of act one, mostly peaceful
