CHAPTER ONE- FEDERATION
Definitions
Constitution- set of rules outlining the structure and powers of an organisation or government.
Federation- a political unit formed from smaller units on a federal basis. Australia’s six colonies united under a central government on January 1st 1901.
Free trade- a belief that trade should be free from tariffs and protection
Tariffs- A list or system of duties imposed by a government on imported or exported goods.
Economic advantages-by uniting as one; the colonies could abolish tariffs on imports. They could also obtain loans and investments from over seas
Defence- the various colonies had a great fear of invasion either from, Russia, Japan or Germany. By uniting as one, the continent could be better defended, also Australia had a really long coastline and at the time a very small population and it would have been difficult to prevent other nations coming in.
White Australian policy (1900-1973) - the various colonies wanted to restrict the immigration and settlement of people into Australia who were not of white European or British origin. The first Act was the immigration restriction Act (1901-1973) which did not allow Asian or non-Europeans to live in Australia.
Nationalism- although various colonies were unique and had their own special characteristics, they shared many things in common such as:
Same racial origins- British or Irish
Same speaking language-English
Same culture- English
Same religion-Christianity
