Jesus had seven I am statements that are in the Gospel of John. Today I will be discussing about the statement concerning the Bread of Life. This statement can be found in a couple of places within the Gospel of John. In John 6:35, ‘Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.’ In John, 6:48, ‘I am the bread of life.’ In John 6:51 ‘I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh”’. As Mr. Morris put it, in that in the first century, bread comprised for much a larger substance in their diet.
The events that are surrounded this statement fall right after Jesus feeds the 5,000 at the Sea of Galilee. The Bible says 5,000 men, this is not including women and children were fed with a minimal amount of food. After he preaches he notices that the crowd was hungry, with most like the Jews during exile. Jesus fist asks Phillip as a test Phillip fails. He states that it would take at least two hundred Denarii worth of bread to feed them. The average daily wage at this time was one Denarius and it would take eight months to earn. That’s when Andrew shows up with a young lad that had five barley loafs and two fish. Barley loaves, at the time, was considered the lowest form of all. Jesus took charge of the situation by having all the people sit. Here upon us is an important aspect of this miracle that Jesus performed. He gave thanks. Thanking the Father of creation for providing for us. This shows that through prayer anything is possible with God. Philippians 4:6 reads, ‘Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.’ After this Jesus withdrew to the mountain side to avoid the
