After that I will describe the basic steps when conducting research reflecting the
systematic approach to research. Then I will discuss the limitations of the scientific and
disciplined approach. Now that I given a brief overview of the topics I will discuss
during this Module 1 case assignment I begin with the definition of research.
According to Trochim (2006) research is often described as an active, diligent,
and systematic process of inquiry aimed at discovering, interpreting, and revising facts.
Trochim (2006) found that this intellectual investigation produces a greater understanding
of events, behaviors, or theories, and makes practical applications through laws and
theories as well. Trochim also informs that the term research is used to describe a
collection of information about a particular subject, and is usually associated with science
and the scientific method. According to Ndundam (2005) research is the systematic
application or use of a set of methods to provide trustworthy information about problems
Ndundam informs research helps to provide facts/reliable information or verifiable
information instead of assumptions as well. Now that I have defined research I will talk
about the systematic approach of research.
According to Ndundam (2005) the systematic approach is based on a scientific
and disciplined inquiry approach to examining educational issues and questions.
Ndundam also informs that the systematic approach combines features of inductive and
deductive reasoning with other characteristics to produce an approach to understanding
that is generally more practical and trustworthy than traditions, experts, personal beliefs
and experiences or inductive and deductive reasoning alone.
Ndunda (2005) four basic steps of systematic approach:
