LOTF - Knowledge Theme
1. Knowledge is important in all aspects of life. It is gained through experience and teaching. Throughout Lord of the Flies by William Golding, knowledge is used and abused. Socrates sums up many events occurring in the book and a certain character with his quote “The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance”. 2. Piggy was the bearer of much knowledge. He had much input but got hardly any credit due to his passive and non-confrontational nature. We see the more egotistical characters walk right over him when really; they should have respected him the most.
2. Piggy’s glasses become an important symbol in the book. The quote on the slide shows they are a part of Piggy’s identity and he cannot live without them. They symbolise a form of protection as they can begin a fire and they give Piggy sight. The boys know this and they abuse their power which leads them to steal Piggy’s glasses for their selfish pleasures leaving Piggy vulnerable. 4. They also act as a symbol of intelligence and knowledge and when Piggy is stripped of his glasses, he changes like a part of him has been ripped off. They are also a sign of scientific intelligence, linking back to the creation of fire.

Piggy states in the book, "How can you expect to be rescued if you don’t put first things first and act proper?" showing how he was adamant on getting home and did everything knowledgeable he could to be careful and stay safe and in the end he was one of the few killed by others who he respected. The use of irony helps compare the boy’s situation back to the real world because just being knowledgeable does not mean security. 6. The conch became an authority figure in the book and if it wasn’t for Piggy’s knowledge on it, Ralph would have not been able to blow it and bring the boys together.
