The Life and Times of Emerson
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was the father of the American Renaissance. Growing up in Boston, Emerson lived a difficult life, marred by illness, poverty, and the death of his father when he was only 8 years old. His mother managed to raise 5 boys alone, including one who was mentally retarded. At 14, Emerson with the help of government grants, he attended Harvard undergraduate school. After graduation, he taught at a girls school and eventually returned to Harvard Divinity School. In 1829, after marrying Ellen Tucker, he was ordained a Unitarian minister. He often confessed to an innate optimism and silliness. In 1831, his wife died of TB and he resigned from his ministry. He set off to Europe and Eurasia to find himself. In 1835, having returned to the states, Emerson married his second wife, Lydia Jackson. They lied in Concord, Massachusetts and raised four children. All the while Emerson gave Lectures and wrote poetry and prose combining his likes of philosophy and nature with politics. In Emersons career he spoke and wrote against slavery and the annexation of Texas speaking at 1500 lectures. He was the centre of the American
