Middle Childhood Observation
Name: (neighbor) Lil M
Location: Home of Lil M
Age: 8 ½ years old I observed Lil M in his own surroundings. Lil M is an average size eight almost nine year old. Very nicely dressed in matching outfit with his long curly hair in a ponytail. There are no other children in the home. As I watch Lil M he watches me watch him and asks me what I am doing. I tell him I am taking notes on how a young boy plays and interacts with his surroundings. Lil M tells me that sounds boring and gos into his room to play his video game. At this age he should be able to jump rope, ride bikes, explain objects and their uses. The fact that Lil M is playing a video game for a much older kid and having no trouble at all lets me know he is in fact advanced in his abilities. I tried to drive and couldn’t even drive straight or shoot accurately. There are no other children to play with so Lil M seems to like the fact that I’m in his presence and paying attention to him. He does not like for me to win, while playing his board game, Sorry, he knocks all the pieces off the board. Now he is playing alone with his machine guns. I watch as he ducks and runs as if he is on a safari only he can see. Clearly bored with me now it would seem like Lil M has forgot I’m sitting in the corner. At this age Lil M can say his numbers from one through twenty. Has a little knowledge of time-telling and can read age appropriate books.
