The ending of “A Modest Proposal” came of great surprise because throughout the beginning of this article Mr. Swift gave perception of a person that was clearly upset with deplorable conditions of the quality of life in Ireland. Where constantly spoke about the vast number of poor people either aged, diseased, or maimed; that had been dying daily due to cold, famine, filth and vermin at a rapid rate; or about the greedy wealthy Englishman that didn’t care about Ireland. So Mr. Swift offered the remedy to this problem was to take the younger population no older than one years of age and offer them as a nutritive meat or skin could be made into a pair of female gloves or men shoes.
Mr. Swift also made mention that a very knowing American, stated that a one year old child was the most delicious, nourishing and wholesome food. There was also various calculations on how this remedy would offer some type of financial growth within Ireland. Where poorer families would now have something of value of their own, as well as taverns would be able to market it as expensive as the pleased.
It was not until the ending that I finally realized the ending would be different. When, Mr. Swift stated “I profess, in sincerity of my heart, that I have not the least personal interest in endeavoring to promote this necessary work; not until this point was made that I had no idea his opinion would change on the sacrificing of children.
In order for me to accept the validity of Mr. Swift’s sudden change in opinion I had to re-read this article and noticed where he made statement of “I am not so violently bent upon my own opinion as to reject any offer proposed by wise men, which shall be found equally innocent, cheap, easy
