3. Much of Reading 2 is about Philadelphia’s efforts simply to find underground systems.
If you were planning a new city, what could you do to make sure your city would not face a problem like Philadelphia’s? Be specific about the procedures or equipment you would use.
My perfect town
To settle a new town is not an easy thing. However, knowing the problems that other cities have with the underground system my focus will be to do a good plan both for underground and above ground construction. First of all I have to prospect the land to find out the composition of the soil in order to determinate what kinds of materials are underground. For this job I will use a big drill machine making holes from place to place and collect samples of the soil. After that, together with an expert in Geology I will decide how deep a I have to dig for buildings foundation. I will choose a grid system for the streets rather than angle or curved streets. Like I’ve seen in a small town in Spain before starting with any construction I will mark all the streets on the land surface and planning the underground system for utilities. I will use excavators to dig tunnels for utilities pipes and wires, following the path of the streets. My idea is to create an underground network of tunnels with concrete walls, large enough to fit all the pipes needed for the town and also to have space for workers moving along the tunnels. After digging the tunnels and install all the tubes, pipes and wires I will apply the ceiling of the tunnel and cover that with an compose of sandy soil. For a good maintenance of underground system of
