Osmosis: Concentration and Potato Strips Essay Example
Controlled Assessment: Osmosis of a Potato
[pic]

Osmosis: Osmosis is the movement of substances through a partially/semi permeable membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration to balance of the concentration of the two sides.
Biological membranes do allow water to pass through, but water will have no net movement unless osmosis takes place.

Preliminary Method
I have chosen to investigate the factor of the weight of potato strips after set amounts of time.

Why Have I Picked Selected Factor?
I have chosen to investigate this factor because it was a factor that I was given to begin with, the reason why I didn’t use any of the other factors that we discussed with the others was because, me and my Partner disagreed on using any of the other factors, and that’s why I have chosen to stay with this factor.

Cells must move materials through membranes in order to maintain homeostasis. The cellular environment is aqueous, indicating that the solutes dissolve in the solvent, water. When a cell is hypertonic, or hypotonic, to its surroundings, it tries to make concentration of solution inside and outside itself equal. However, the solutes are too big to pass the cell membranes without the help of channel proteins, or transport proteins. Water may freely pass through the membrane by osmosis, which requires no energy. Thus, the cell starts to take in, or release, water until it is isotionic to its…

In this lab we will look at how molecules move across the membrane of a cell . Osmosis is the movement of water across a cell membrane. In osmosis the cell membrane is selectively permeable, which allows for the membrane to control what types of substances that passes through.Transportation can either be passive or active.Passive transport does not require the use of added energy where as active transport requires the cell to use energy.…

Osmosis is the diffusion of water and water particles through a selectively permeable membrane. The process in which special chemicals that cannot pass through by themselves are helped by special protein channels is called facilitated diffusion. Comparisons: Diffusion, Osmosis, and Facilitated Diffusion all involve movement of solutes in a solution from high to low concentrations. They all involve crossing of the cell membrane.…

Both water-soluble (hydrophilic) and lipid soluble (hydrophobic) substances are able to pass across the cell membrane. It is easier for lipid-soluble compounds to pass relatively quickly through by dissolving in the lipid layer. Water needs to pass through via osmosis where as water-soluble substances cross the membrane through simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion and active transport.…
