Thinking Maps Strategy #5

1. Positive greater than zero. Explicitly stated, stipulated, or expressed
2. Negative expressing or containing negation or denial. Less than zero.
3. Permeable capable of being permeated. Capable of being passed through or permeated, especially by liquids or gases.

4. Cell membrane the semi permeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell.
5. Solute concentration a component of a solution: in a solution, the dissolving substance is called a solvent whereas the dissolved substance

6. Osmosis the tendency of a fluid, usually water, to pass through a semipermeable membrane into a solution where the solvent concentration is higher,

7. Active transport the movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration, assisted by enzymes and requiring energy

8. Diffusion act of diffusing; state of being diffused. The reflection or refraction of radiation such as light or sound by an irregular surface, tending to scatter it in many directions.
9. Cell energy Cellular respiration, also known as 'oxidative metabolism', is one of the key ways a cell gains useful energy

10. Diffusion act of diffusing; state of being diffused

11. Chemical processes any process determined by the atomic and molecular composition and structure of the substances involved.

12. Regulatory mechanisms are those that are systems of contol in keeping the internal environment relatively stable and maintained within narrow limits, despite external environment change.

13. Bonding patterns something that binds, fastens, confines, or holds together

14. Biochemical reactions the process in which two or more molecules (reactants) interact

15. Replication the reply of the plaintiff or complainant to the defendant's plea or answer

Osmosis is the passing of water or other solutions from an area of high concentration of particles to an area of less concentration. The cell membrane is an organelle, selectively permeable, and only allows certain materials to pass through; it can allow smaller molecules to pass while blocking larger molecules. Molecules that are blocked can be moved through active transport, such as, through proteins that are embedded in the bilayer of lipids.…

Since I was a little kid, I loved to learn about anything I could. I think HPU would inspire me to do great things and learn a lot. I loved to read a lot, and observe the world around me so I could understand it. I loved to find out about things I didn’t know. I loved to find out about bugs and plants, and I especially loved to watch the stars and wonder about them, because they were the hardest to get to, but simultaneously the most beautiful. As I grew up, one of the people I began to really look up to was Neil Degrasse Tyson. He had grown up in New York, a place almost devoid of starlight, and grew up to be a very successful astrophysicist. He worked hard, and became successful in something he was passionate about. In HPU I can see the stars and learn about things around me and my environment. He works closely now with wonders of the universe, and is becoming a leader in his field today. His achievements, combined with his ability to teach others about complex information, and his want to bring the human race into a closer understanding of the universe around is, makes him a great man. It is his example that I like to follow, his determination and curiosity and love of knowing more, he lets his hunger drive him to discover new aspects of the world, knowledge that can help achieve something better in life. I've always admired these qualities, and I’ve always wanted to reflect them in myself. It hasn’t been easy, but I’ve always strived to learn more in school and apply myself to subjects that were very enticing to me. I’ve always held that knowledge is power and I believe that my education is a huge part of that. The most exciting part about college, unlike high school, is that I get to choose what I’d like to learn about, which could also help me secure a better career in the future. I love so many different subjects, but I really like how science is a field where its advances can help people, and whatever career I choose, I would like it to be one that helps…
