Overall the impact of the First World War was great. In this paper I will be evaluating and analysing 3 representations and using my own knowledge to discover British civilians reactions to their experiences of the Second World War. After analysing all 3 representations and using my own knowledge, I will make a judgement as to which one I think best represents the civilians reactions to the Second World War.

Representation 1 is an online article from Student Pulse written by Craig Stewart-Hunter and published in 2011. This representation says that the morale was a ‘myth’ which suggests it believes the civilians weren’t happy and high spirited as the propaganda makes them look. This representation suggests that civilians in Britain suffered during the Second World War. As the purpose of this article is to critically analyse and inform, it is most likely consists of facts and is most likely not biased. Having learnt about government propaganda at that time and knowing that the war wasn’t what people thought it was, I would say this article is pretty much reliable. Also it was written very recently (2011) therefore would have no reason to be biased as it wouldn’t particularly have any pressure from the government to make the war sound good. However I do believe some aspects of this article have been exaggerated as during the Blitz people did come together to support each other for things such as seeking shelter in friends or relatives houses or ‘rest centers’ run by the WVS. this source is useful if you wanted to know all about the civilians reactions to the Blitz, however I want to learn about he civilians reactions to the Second World War therefore this representation is not very useful. It only gives details on one aspect and only considers the negatives. informing the readers on positive aspects aswell would turn this article into a more informative and insightful piece.

Representation 2 is the front cover of a British comic named Red Dagger. It

The films that are discussed in “Re-viewing the Past” have historical inaccuracies. As much as film makers want to depict the actually story correctly, there is always something that they leave out or exaggerate. The inaccuracy described in Black Robe was due to the lack of knowledge coming from the missionaries' letters. The letters claimed that the Indians agreed to the 1,500 mile journey with Laforgue. However, the author is stating that part was inaccurate. In The Crucible the affair between Abigail Williams and John Proctor was exaggerated due to the lack of evidence. It does seem a little outlandish because the real Proctor was 60 years old and Abigail was only 11. The filmmaker just wanted to make a more dramatic effect to the movie. Also, the testimony of the Proctor's were altered to make the adulterous affair seem more legitimate. In the well known movie, The Patriot, the retelling of the war of the south was misrepresented. There was no such person as Benjamin Martin or the infamous burning of the church the movie reenacts. The author talks about the debate on whether or not the movie accurately describes warfare being civilized. There were two movies titled The Alamo in which both reenact the events surrounding the defense of the Alamo. The first movie made shows Crockett stealing cattle and destroying artillery. However, there is no evidence in history detailing his actions. Also, both movies wrongly tell Santa Anna's attack on the Alamo because he didn't truly have the heavy artillery as the movie shows. The last film, Cold Mountain, is not based on any historical events. It is solely for entertainment to describe the emotional turmoil the Civil War caused. Although each movie has inaccuracies overall they each describe the events that happened in each time period.…

“All Quiet in the Western Front” is a social commentary on how soldiers are effected emotionally and socially throughout the war and are conflicted on how to readjust to their lives after the Great War. Soldiers are conflicted by their character and do not know whether to pick back life up as a youth or as adults who have endured hard circumstances. The book does not focus on battles and it does not focus on a specific time frame, it rather evaluates what goes through the minds of a soldier. These men are literally being bombarded in the war front by explosives and in the home front by misinformed public who want to know the extremity of the war. Bystanders set High expectations for soldiers to be tough and to know how to behave in order to survive, yet those who did not participate in the Great War could only speculate what was going on in the soldier’s minds. The Great War damaged these soldiers physically and mentally, however certain elements gave the survivors the ability to pull through the war. The youth shifted its mentality and lost its innocence in the Great War. Therefore, Remarque did not focus his book on the combat that took place during the Great War, rather he presents social issues, which does not belittle his experience rather it presents a different view of the…

Interpretation of war and the relationship between soldiers and civilians are different when discussing World War 1 and the wars of today. Whether one is a soldier, spectator from far away, or a civilian watching it first hand, war cannot truly be comprehended and understood, unless it has been physically experienced. Erich Maria Remarque, a German World War I veteran, depicts the atrocities and brutalities of war in his novel, All Quiet on the Western Front. The gap between the expectations of soldiers and civilians are solidified through civilians’ inability to comprehend the impacts of war. This destruction of war has created such a profound impact on soldiers as they are now unable to formulate and comprehend their true identity as compared to their interpretation of who they were before the war.…

War is a very controversial topic for many people. Depending on the person’s outlook on the war, it can be depicted as something good or bad. War brings destruction wherever it goes, whether it is on a place or the people, and it ultimately is inevitable. War also protects a country from having further destruction and keeps the people at home safe from any danger. As a person can see in many recordings of war, there are many comparisons and contrasts that are expressed through soldiers, veterans, and civilians. Some comparisons seen in many of the testimonies given by effected people are dehumanization, dislocation, and alienation; but they also have contrasts that can be seen through nationalism, technological advancements, and the coming home for many…

While no war is a “good” war, sometimes to maintain the security that is necessary for the residents of the country war has to break out or be joined. In the case of the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor, German U-Boats attacking our vessels, and Italy protecting the other two countries, these “evil” powers were indeed risking the safety of the citizens of the United States. As any parent would want to protect their children the best they could, Eisenhower knew that declaring war was the only way to protect the people’s well being. This is what makes the war to be a so called good war.…

War is a human invention that has been evolving over the millennia. As such, each human has been touched by the effects and results of war in one manor or another, regardless of how remote. However, few people understand the realities of war. In his book Acts of war: The Behaviour of Men in Battle, Richard Holmes tries to make understanding military life digestible for the overage person. Including, but not limited to, training, deployment, battle, everyday soldier life, readjustment to civilian life, and lasting impacts on soldiers. With the use of well organized, poorly named, dense chapters, Holmes attempts to explore what makes a war novel credible, all the while explaining the effects of war using examples that no lay-person could begin…
