Perception and Societal Factors Essay Example
I have chosen the movie “Life, staring Martin Lawrence, and Eddie Murphy”. The movie takes place in the Mississippi during the 1930’s, as two would be bootleggers are framed for a murder committed by a white man who happens to be in a role of power, as the sheriff. Because of the times and place it is not hard to frame two black men who come from the north of the United States. The role of power, and historical time period is prevalent in the movie in several instances; the first is in the beginning in New York City when Claude (Martin Lawrence) gets robed in the bathroom and has no money to pay for his bill at the speak easy. This allows the owner Spankey to abduct him and press him into service to make a liquor run to Mississippi with Ray (Eddie Murphy). The second instance takes in the south where they come upon the dead body of a black man, who we find out later was killed by the sheriff. The Sheriff was able to get away with this murder and frame Claude, and Ray because of the many societal factors that played out in the movie.
• The Sheriff was in the obvious Role of Power, where he was able to frame Claude and Ray because they were just out of Towner’s, and he had the law on his side which he was able to manipulate.
• The Role of Culture and the Role of Historical Time Period were also prevalent in so that where Claude and Ray were framed for murder was in in the early 1930’s in southern Mississippi, which is a notable segregated period of time, being that Claude and Ray are African American and from the north,(New York City). The Culture was a racist one where whites held power.
• The Role of Social Comparison was also prevalent at their trial where they stood no chance of a fair trial, the judge was white the sheriff was white, as well as the jury.
With the perception of the time and the societal factors that came into play Claude and Ray stood no chance of coming out with anything resembling a fair trial and were sentenced to life in prison
