Personal Philosophy of Nursing Essay Example
Philosophy is defined in the dictionary as the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Recently Simmons has referred to philosophy as “knowledge of first causes or of the highest principles of things in so far as these causes or things belong to the natural, as opposed to the supernatural order.” (Simmons 1992 p.112)
My nursing philosophy is one of holistic care, delivering compassionate and culturally sensitive care to patients and families. I believe that nursing is an occupation that includes professional individuals that demonstrate and express compassion, respect, dignity, and integrity to their patients and fellow coworkers. Schrock is quoted to have said that “nurses are born, not made; nursing is an art based on common sense”. I believe this to be true. So many people go into this profession for the wrong reasons as discussed in class week. Nursing is not a profession one enters in to make a large quantity of money. Nursing is a career that you have to love doing, because it was born into you.
My personal philosophy on nursing as a career is to be a patient advocate through clear communication, education, and applying critical thinking, and decision making skills to help better the patients' outcome. As a nurse, it is important to me to provide the highest quality nursing care possible to achieve excellence in patient results and at the same time, providing a respectful healing environment. Nursing is about compassion and trying to understand human beings on all emotional, physical, and scientific levels. It is a profession which uses evidence based practices yet displays a comprehensive understanding of human beings. As a professional nurse I feel a personal commitment toward life-long learning, through formal education and hands-on experience to better myself and my nursing knowledge.
