The human desires of greed, wealth, and power have been embedded into the world's history as political figures have led invasions of other countries countless numbers of times. Whether invaded or being invaded, a country requires strong and capable leaders to see them through this difficult time. In 1588, Queen Elizabeth I of England gave a motivational speech to her troops using the rhetorical devices of diction, imagery, and sentence structure to motivate her subjects positively and to instill the fear of the pending invasion in their hearts.…

Through the many letters sent by John and Abigail Adams, the film's portrayal of their correspondence seems to be accurate and similar to the actual letters. In both the film and the letters, Abigail Adams seems to be more of a self-sufficient and self-reliant homemaker than anticipated. As for John Adams, he seems to express his feelings toward Abigail more in the film than in the letters. Gender issues are apparent in both the film and the letters.…
Elizabeth had inherited the throne of England in 1558 from a Catholic queen Mary who had attempted to re-convert England back to Catholicism and to allow the country to take part in the Catholic reformation of Europe. The accession of Elizabeth was met with anxiety and tension as to discover what she was to do in response to religion and how the Catholic powers of Europe as well as the Catholics within England at the time would treat any changes. The immediate rise to power was met with little hostility as Elizabeth had made very cautious changes to start with as she thought it wise not to provoke hostility from abroad considering the position of England at the time as a small, weak protestant nation. The start of Elizabeth’s reign was fairly peaceful however tensions rose and a Catholic threat seemed more imminent as her reign drew to the end.…
Queen Elizabeth I, also known as “The Virgin Queen,” was one of the most famous monarchs of all time and her reign was called The Golden Age. Born Elizabeth Tudor, September 7, 1533 in Greenwich, England to King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Her birth was quite a disappointment to the king because he was hoping for a male heir.1 At the time, King Henry VIII was still married to Queen Katherine of Aragon and wanted a divorce from her so that he could marry Elizabeth’s mother Anne Boleyn. It was not too long before King Henry VIII rectified this by going before the Pope and requesting an annulment from Queen Katherine. It was at that time, Elizabeth’s half-sister Mary, the daughter of King Henry VIII and Queen Katherine of Aragon, was named illegitimate. Elizabeth’s mother, Queen Anne, was unable to provide a son to the king and was executed for supposed adultery, when Elizabeth was only two years old. Shortly after her mother’s death, Elizabeth was declared illegitimate and her place in the line of succession was taken away, her reputation was tarnished because of her mother’s speculated infidelity and other scandalous matters. After her mother’s death, Elizabeth had many stepmothers throughout her childhood, Jane Seymour died giving birth to the King’s only son, Prince Edward; Anne of Cleves whom King Henry VII divorced; Catherine Howard was beheaded; and finally Katherine Parr, who was the only wife of King Henry VII to outlive him.…

Art in Elizabethan Times was just as popular as activities like dancing and going to the theatre to watch a performance. There was a wide range of different styles of art. But one of the most popular styles of art was called “miniature painting” or “limning”. The name “miniature painting” was derived from the word minimum. Mninature paintings were a very popular style of art and paintings, this style flourished from the 16th Century to the 19th. These paintings were originally painted with water colours but they were also made or colored with pastels, oils, or pencils. Because of they’re small shape, it was popular to get a miniature painting done, and place it inside a locket. Some miniature paintings were painted on ivory instead of a canvas. Most miniature paintings included family emblems, coat of arms, or pictures re-interpreting stories or poems that had hidden meanings or messages. One of the most popular artists known for his miniature paintings was Nicholas Hilliard. Hilliard was born in 1547 in England. Nicholas Hilliard was trained and worked as a goldsmith and jeweler before becoming an artist. Hilliard was first introduced to miniature paintings by seeing and admiring the work of Hans Holbein, a miniature painter from Germany. Holbein’s work inspired Nicholas Hilliard to become a miniature artist himself. Nicholas Hilliard’s first known painting was done in 1560. Later on, in 1570 Hilliard became a painter for Queen Elizabeth I (The First). He designed her document seal in 1584, and later on created the “The Pelican Portrait” of Queen Elizabeth I. Nicholas Hilliard was one of the Queen’s favorite artists. Outside of painting for Queen Elizabeth I, Nicholas Hilliard had his first of seven children in 1582 with his wife, Alice. The first born of their several children, Lawrence Hilliard began practicing miniature painting when he was 14, following in his father’s footsteps. Nicholas Hilliard was a well known and respected miniature artist. His pieces…

At this point of time it is unknown to the reader whether the Lady of Shalott is forced to be in this situation or chose to live this life of isolation. Reasons for a self inflicted seclusion might be homophobia, the fear of rejection by the exterior world, or simply a lack of interest for it. However, the Lady of Shalott is quite content with what she has and what she does. Her life of art in front of the loom and the crystal mirror is all she needs singing her ”…song that echoes cheerly…” (30) throughout the land. She is as innocent as a careless child giving little thought about her future. The Lady of Shalott has no urge to leave her own interior world because she is not aware of any other options. Little is known about her outside…

As one of the most influential people that I know, Queen Elizabeth II has deeply affected both history and my personal life. She was born at 2:40 am on April 21st, 1926 at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair, London. As the first child of The Duke and Duchess of York, it was still unlikely Queen Elizabeth II would have ever become who she is today. For at the time she stood third in line of succession to the throne after King Edward VIII, and then her father, The Duke of York. The Princess was Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, named after her mother, while her two middle names belonged to her grandmother and great- grandmother. In 1930, Princess Elizabeth came to have a sister, named Princess Margaret Rose.…
