QUOTE LIST HOMEWORK
THE ODYSSEY:
1) “Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns driven time and again off course, once he had plundered the hallowed heights of Troy…” This quote is spoken and composed by Homer, the original author, and its meaning gives a foreshadowing of Odysseus’ characteristics (the man of twists and turns describes Odysseus cunning) and plight (driven time and time again off course describes the many obstacles to Odysseus’ nostos or homecoming).
2) “…No winning words about death to me, shining Odysseus! By god, I’d rather slave on earth for another man—some dirt-poor tenant farmer who scrapes to keep alive— than rule down here over all the breathless dead.” The quote is spoken by Achilles, the greatest Greek warrior, and composed by Homer. It’s meaning is how Achilles who acquired all the kleos that Odysseus desires, yet has nothing to show for it, he died very young and violently.
3) “But if you only knew, down deep, what pains are fated to fill your cup before you reach that shore, you’d stay right here, preside in our house with me and be immortal. Much as you long to see your wife, the one you pine for all your days . . .” The quote is spoken by Calypso, and composed by Homer. The meaning is how Calypso is playing with man’s temptation, in this world who wouldn’t want to be immortal and sleep with an immortal goddess. However, Odysseus overcomes that temptation and resolves to live and die with his mortal wife and watch his son grow up.
THE GLASS MENAGERIE:
1) “But the wonder fullest trick of all was the coffin trick. We nailed him into a coffin and he got out of the coffin without removing one nail. . . . You know it don’t take much intelligence to get yourself into a nailed-up coffin, Laura. But who in hell ever got himself out of one without removing one nail?” The speaker of this quote is Tom Wingfield and the composer is Tennessee Williams.
