The major materials used were plain dirt, gravel, and pavement each used based on the type of road the Romans were building. For example, a private road where people often rarely travelled would be primarily made up of dirt while military roads got the best materials since they would be used most often. Most of the constructional knowledge the Romans had achieved during their time was expanded from the Etruscans. The road construction in Rome can almost be viewed as an art where each piece was laid with a significant purpose and amount of detail to the overall project itself. Remarkably many of the ancient structures along the Roman roads such as bridges and archways are still in use today symbolizing one of Rome’s greatest accomplishment in building these roads to truly last (Andrews, 2014).…

“Marketing strategies can have a broad impact on the business in terms of instilling a marketing orientation among all those in the firm: the way of thinking or philosophy of the whole organization. However, marketing strategies can alternatively be seen as dealing only with the development of competitive advantages directly associated with the marketing function such as customer loyalty and distribution channel control. In the latter case, the domain is sometimes even further restricted by sole attention to the various element of the marketing mix rather than the more general issues of customer and channel relationships. There are two key distinctions which are central to marketing management: the selection of target markets which determine where the firm will compete and the design of marketing mix (product, price, promotion and distribution method) which will determine its success in these markets. The marketing mix refers to the apportionment of effort, the combination, the designing and the integration of the elements of marketing into a programme or “mix” which, on the basis of an appraisal of the market forces, will best achieve the objectives of an enterprise at a given time.” (Michael J. Backer)…

The sales and marketing function work to find and create demand for the company's goods and services by understanding customer needs and developing new markets. The need for marketing and operations to work closely together is particularly important as the marketing function will provide the forecast of demand from which operations can plan sufficient capacity in order to deliver goods and services on time. The finance function is responsible for the obtaining and controlling of funds and cov¬ering decisions such as investment in equipment and price-volume decisions. Other functions which play a supporting role in the organisation include the personnel function which will play a role on the recruitment and labour relations, the research and development R&D function which generates and investigates the potential of new ideas and the information technology (IT) department which supplies and co-ordinates the computer-based information needs of the organisation. The relationship between functions can be seen as a number of sub-systems within the system called the 'organisation'. Thus each function (e.g. marketing) can be treated using the same input/process/output transformation model as the operations function. In other words each function within the organisation can be treated as performing an operations activity, as they are transforming inputs into outputs. This implies every part of the organisation is involved in the operations activity (to an external or internal customer) and thus the theory of operations covered in this book is relevant to them. When oper¬ation is cited as a function in itself however it is referring to the part of the organisation which provides goods and services for external customers. The operations function itself is involved in all parts of the firm and thus has a major impact on the competitive position of the organisation. The…

An American citizen would find it difficult to settle in and watch television programming that does not include multiple advertisements for this, that, or the other, prescription drug. Some might say why not, prescription medication is a product like anything else. The answer lies, quite simply, in the overwhelming negative effects of Big Pharmas’ direct to consumer advertising. Given these overwhelming negative effects, the federal government should revisit this policy thereby improving the lives and health of Americans. The negative effects of DTCAs are straining relationships between physicians and patients, misinforming, corrupting,…
