According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the average teenager engages in sexual intercourse by the age of seventeen, but do not marry until the mid-twenties (citation). There are two broad techniques used to provide sex education, comprehensive sex education and abstinence based sex education (Mezey, 2011). The abstinence-based avenue explains to children that it is morally wrong to have sex prior to a heterosexual marriage, which leads to many problems such as higher rates of unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and a lack of knowledge on all subjects related to sex and healthy relationships (2011). This is especially true amongst LGBTQIA+ and people with disabilities because they are left to find out sex and sexually related experiences through trial and error, and the Internet. Comprehensive sex education on the other hand, is when students are presented with every possible contraceptive option, their benefits and risks, statistical safety from preventing pregnancy and STDs/STIs (2011). Comprehensive sex education is essential for students to grow into functioning adults, and thus participating members of a democracy (2011). As part of the proposal, all students are sent home with a parent consent form. This form will state in extensive detail what is to be taught to their student during their experience. If any parent feels they do not want their child learning something, the child can be taken out of the class for a specific day or not participate in any of the program. Abstinence-only sex educations’ exclusive purpose is teaching the social, psychological, and health gains to be realized by abstaining from sexual activity. But, this program excludes other types of sexual and reproduction health education, particularly regarding birth control and safe sex. By excluding this information, abstinence-only programs may end up deterring contraceptive use among teens that do have sex, risking underage teen pregnancies. When I think of the word “sex” I think of intimacy, privacy, and discretion. For most teenagers sex is just what is popular at the time. They don’t understand that it is not like any other fad. Now that sex has become popular it is the parents’ job to do something to change it. Children are taught how to interact with others and the difference of what is right and wrong by their parents from birth. If parents don’t teach their kids that no amount of popularity is worth the burden of a child at a young age then no one will. Many sex education class just preach abstinence, and not how to use birth controls properly or tell the teens of the failure rate. Schools are now getting involved, some even handing out birth control, but not explaining how to properly use them. Birth control decisions should be kept at home, between the parents and the child. Another case of a social problem being frequently discussed in our country is the immoral or improper sexual behaviours, especially among youngsters. I have chosen two articles pertaining to this issue. For the first article, it is written by Loh Ling Ming, a writer from News Straits Time (2005), a consultant with both the FamilyLife and Leadership Development Ministries of Malaysia Campus Crusade for Christ. She has stated in her article, Sex Education from the Cradle, that this problem may be countered by teaching sex education to children as early as possible. However, her arguments in the acknowledged article are still questionable and unsound.
