Introduction to Ancient Civilisations – Online Learning Activity
You have learned that Civilisations generally share a set of common features. This exercise will let you explore three different societies. You may divide the work among your group. In this exercise, you will compare ancient Sumeria to:
The Yanomami, a tribal culture which still exists today in the Amazon jungle (see Textbook 5A pg. 26-28)
The “Jiroft Culture”, named after the excavation site in modern-day Iran. This is a recently discovered site which was first investigated in 2001. Some experts believe that it holds evidence of an entirely new civilisation – but others are not convinced.
Now that you know what the features of a Civilisation are, your task is to:
1. Look for information about each society in relation to the features of a Civilisation. For instance, did they live in cities? If not, what were their settlements like?
2. Analyse these 3 societies and judge WHICH ONES can be classified as CIVILISATONS, and WHY.
