The Dangers of Alcohol Use by Minors

“Plastered, Hammered, Wasted, Drunk, Lifted.. These are all terms my friends use on any given Friday or Saturday night to ask if I want to party for the weekend! When we do get to parties, kids are doing keg stands (Where someone holds your legs up in the air, you grab the keg with both hands, and someone else feeds your beer through the hose upside down.) We play quarters, beer pong, and flip cup. The drinking games are endless as in the alcohol available to teens. “Hey Ryan, let’s go out tonight, find a few girls, and throwback a few brewskies!” Temptation to drink alcohol as a minor is everywhere! Some corner stores sell it to us, older brothers and sisters get it for us, or we can just wait for someone who looks cool to go in and buy it for us.

Before having to do the research on teens and alcohol, I truly did not think it was that big of a deal. I though alcohol was acceptable because everyone does it casually and in order to be popular, you want to fit in at the parties. I believed I could drink 6 beers and 2 shots and probably arrive home safely. I’ve seen kids drink 11-17 beers and still be standing. The amount teens are drinking is truly scary. I have even seen kids get behind the wheel, not realizing how intoxicated they were until they had to get out of the car. These things all frighten me. I know my mom would completely devastated if she knew I was drinking and driving. I have seen tragedy in alcohol related events with my friends, and I do not want to end up being statistic like they were. In March of 2011, 6 of my friends were consuming alcohol and taking Zanax Bars. They weren’t driving, but were so intoxicated, the home caught on fire, and they didn’t wake up in time to get out. All six of my friends died. I’ve seen my friends get arrested and thrown in the back of Police cars for Intoxication. I’ve had a friend fall asleep because she was so drunk and died from crashing her car. The dangers

The most horrifying event a parent can imagine is losing a child. Especially when it could have been avoided. According to David J. Hanson, "People aged sixteen to twenty-four were involved in twenty-eight percent of all alcohol related driving accidents, although they make up only fourteen percent of the population" (1). This statistic is shocking, but it should not be a surprise. A teenager in today 's society is constantly pressured and bombarded by peers, parents, or advertising condoning the use alcohol. Drinking and driving among teenagers has become an epidemic and the staggering number of deceased is getting larger with each passing day.…

If the drinking age was changed from 21 to 18 the number of arrests would skyrocket. “In 2011, at least 23% of auto collisions involved cell phones (Texting and driving safety).” Teenagers are already distracted behind the wheel when we add the influence of alcohol not only will the teen be a danger to their self but they will also be a danger to others on the road. One quote that truly sparks the fire in this argument is “it is not (usually) alcohol that kills, it is drunken driving that kills (Eastman).” This quote truly speaks volume in this argument because when you look at this statist of car accidents from the CDC “In 2014, 2,270 teens in the United States ages 16–19 were killed and 221,313 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes.1 That means that six teens ages 16–19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries” you can see that teens have a high risk of getting in accidence because of so many distractions from texting, listening to music, or when they are with a group of friends, now when we add alcohol as a contributing factor we will see that no one will be safe on the road, because in the quote mentioned above alcohol is not what kills it the drunken driver and when we drink we lose the mental capacity of what makes sense and what doesn’t we believe we can do things we…

I do not think that the mind of a teenager could handle alcohol, especially if not taught how to drink responsibly. Teens, in my opinion, are not mature enough to be given that open opportunity. I think that it would cause more harm than good. It would be my assumption that if we lowered the drinking age, there would be a higher change of alcoholism and alcohol related deaths among teenagers. That may not be true but it seems as though it would be reasonable to assume so. According to SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) statistics, “during the past month (30 days), 26.4% of underage persons (ages 12-20) used alcohol, and binge drinking among the same age group was 17.4%” and “alcohol use remains extremely widespread among today’s teenagers. Nearly three quarters of students (72%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by the end of high school, and more than a third (37%) have done so by eighth grade.” So given these statistics, I believe it is time we step up, as adults and teach our youth the effects of alcohol, good and bad, and to teach them how to consume responsibly. If we do not do this, I believe the underage binge drinking statistics will continue to…

In European countries, the consumption of alcohol is more of a normal activity than in the United States. Growing in up in our country today teens want to drink alchohol more because they aren't supposed to have it. They see it as a sign of adulthood or maturity. So in order to gain this sense of adult-hood, they do things such as sneaking into clubs and bars or buying alchohol for their friends with fake ID's. This can lead to many predicaments because these teens have not been raised with any experience with alcohol, and they will not know how to handle it or act responsibly. Research has shown that most teens drink only to become intoxicated. So many of them binge drink; this is the consumption of an excessive amount of alcohol in a short period of time. Binge drinking can lead to numerous problems such as alcohol poisoning which can be deadly and require emergency treatment. This could be avoided if teens knew how to be responsible with drinking and were taught by their parents like other countries instead of being banned from it until the age of 21. Per capita the consumption of alcohol in countries such as France, Spain, and Portugal is higher than the United States, the rate of alcohol abuse and alcoholism is lower. This supports how people are more responsible if they are raised with alcohol as a part of every day life instead of hiding it until they believe that people are old enough to finally discover it…

Lowering the drinking age to 18 will have serious consequences such as the increase in traffic fatalities. According to the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, “in the United States in 2007, the death toll from teenage drunk-driving accidents was 1,393 – nearly four fatalities every day of the year.” (Drinking and Driving, 2006-2015). At such youthful age, these teens are not responsible enough to know that they should not drink and drive. They assume that they are perfectly fine after consuming alcohol, and thinks that it is ok for them to drive, until they find themselves inside a morgue. It was stated by the American Journal of Public Health that “the lower minimum legal drinking age was followed by increases in sale and consumption of alcohol…

Drinking and driving is not as big of a problem in other countries as it is here in the United States. Simply because it is not seen as a taboo among young people in 157 countries that have the age requirement set to eighteen - zero. If we normalized the act of socially drinking it wouldn't be such a big deal and more teenagers wouldn't be inadvertently disobeying the law. “According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, underage drinking accounts for $22.5 billion of consumer spending for alcohol in the United States. In 2006, 72.2% of twelfth graders reported drinking alcohol at some point in their…

The number of drinkers has been on the increase over the past two decades and continues to rise. Consumption of alcohol is common among the underage population with at least 30% of underage drinkers engaging in risky behavior during and after drinking. This behavior reaches its peak between ages 18/19-24 in what can be attributed to the abuse of drinking when a person reaches the legal drinking age and doesn’t have to be accountable to anymore but self. These risky drinking habits reduce from the age of 25 years onwards because of the level of responsibility and maturity that comes with this age. Additionally, young people in this age group tend to drink more than five bottles of alcohol in one sitting during events like parties and when adults are absent. Peer pressure and the need for a person to feel “cool” pushes this group into risky behaviors that predisposes them to a number of harms. Risks include alcohol poisoning, injury, violence, and unprotected sex among others. If, at this age, they prolong drinking, long term risks like cancer, liver, and heart diseases become realities later on in life. Though preventable, alcohol related trauma causes significant number of deaths among the…

Fewer than one percent of people who are exposed to alcohol in the U.S have required medical attention due to consumption. Some people argue that strict laws on alcohol are needed to prevent people from endangering themselves or others, however if we taught moderation and responsibility at an early age we could still enjoy the benefits of drinking in a more controlled environment. The laws that focus on drinking need to be formed to include all of the teaching moments and benefits that go along with a privilege like moderate alcohol consumption.…
