Answer = Acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the more serious environmental problems in the mining industry. AMD is the major pollutant of surface waters in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United States (US EPA, 2006). The formation of AMD is a very complex chemical and microbial process, and usually occurs where deep excavations, such as those associated with coal mining, expose unweathered pyritic materials. Water contaminated by AMD on permitted sites where…

The project studied is located in Pueblo Viejo, Cotui, world-class mineral resource and one of the biggest non-developed gold deposits. Through the development of the project, the Barrick Gold has been able to get the results they wanted from the mine, but there have been several discussions within the Dominican population over the disadvantages that it has brought to the economy of the country. Moreover, the Dominican State has a prior interest for the country to develop economically, generating jobs and taxes. But as the project develops, it is noticed the increasing damage that Barrick Gold’s actions have on the environment of the country, especially in Cotuí. The main fear of the cotuisanos is that within 25 years, when Barrick completes its work, they will be left in a contaminated town, with no natural resources and without the benefit of the billions of dollars in resources that it’s being extracted at the moment (Protest Barrick Gold, 2007).…

Every tribe, city and nation has its own story that gives it a defining trait and our state of California is no different. Most people know that California is also known as the “Golden State”, but among all the reasons that gave it this name, aside from the unlimited sunshine throughout the year, the Gold Rush back in the mid 19th century is probably the most significant one of all. Most would agree that the Gold Rush was a positive, iconic event in California’s history but many are unaware of the environmental damages caused by mining operations done during this golden era. This essay aims to identify the origin of the Gold Rush and identify the techniques used while also noting the harmful effects caused by each one.…
The California Gold Rush brought displeasure to our environment. Millions of years of beautiful Californian land has been destroyed in the aftermath in the search for precious gold. The greed got the best of many which left grief for Mother Nature.…
The Gold Rush was a significant event that affected not only the development of California, but also the outcome of the United States of America. It was a period of time in American history in which large groups of people migrated with hopes to find gold in California, which proved to be crucial for the success and growth of California. The California Gold Rush had a major impact on the development of California, as it caused the economy and cities of California to flourish. This event caused major changes in California, such as a population increase, more opportunities for people, and advancements in cities.…
The Gold Rush started in 1848 whenever James Marshal Found gold flakes in sutter's Mill california in the sacramento valley. Soon after people heard the news people from all over came to california leaving their homes and families in hopes of finding gold and become rich. Migrants from all over came in search of the precious mineral . People all the way from the Sandwich islands (which is what the Hawaiian islands were used to be called) China, Mexico, Chile and Peru. These people would become known as the 49er’s. Ironically everyone benefited from the Gold Rush except the miners themselves. General stores sold supplies to the miners blacksmiths made…
This catastrophe occurred in 2011 and has brought to light the danger mining has on the health of the Djibo people. The two 20 ton containers were filled with Cyanide and being transported to Inata Gold Mine, forty miles from Djibo. A deadly amount of Cyanide was leaked into the air and water used by citizens. Cyanide takes up to three years to clear out of the air, and the amount of time it takes for the toxic chemical to be cleared from water is unknown. Fish were found poisoned and local radio stations urged everyone to not use the water in the lake or wells. Although no human deaths were reported it brings alive a very serious health risk to the people of Djibo. This needs to be addressed when researching the current outbreak. The possibility of children being exposed to chemicals either by water, air, or lack of safe transportation is deadly. This could enhance the symptoms of the disease, be the cause, or a gate way to other diseases. By the accident that occurred in 2011 it is made clear that the transportation of toxic chemicals by the nearby gold mining companies is unsafe and dangerous to the people. Mining activity also contaminates water with naturally occurring arsenic. Water contamination is a major factor to be considered of the new outbreak and mining companies need to be thoroughly investigated. (Stephan…
Mining is occurring because of the desire and need for the minerals and geological materials that are being extracted. The products extracted from the mines are used in many ways and the world today would be very different if these mined products were not…
America is very unique country and well known for being the land of opportunities. It has a rich history and one of most famous and largest periods was gold rush happened in California throughout 1848-1858. The gold that was found in California was considered exclusive because golden nuggets were found in the river which made it easy to collect and free to take home. Many of the gold seekers believed that they would return home in a few months or in a year with their pockets full of gold. The spirit of gold attracted hundreds and thousands of people from around the world to California. The influence of the California gold rush had major effects on the migration and the economic…
We can improve this because instead of blasting up the environment and animals homes we can do this in a more safer way. For example, you can minimize and control how much gold you are taking out of the ground. This will help the environment because instead of taking a lot and blowing up a lot of the earth we can start minimizing how much we take out of the ground, so we can have a safer environment to live on and a safer planet to live on too. Another way we can improve and help the environment while mining for gold in a positive way is when you are mining you go in a certain spot and only stay there. What I am trying to say is instead of just mining where ever you want to go and you know animal homes are there what you could do is find a certain spot where you can mine and only stay in that area. So this will help the environment because say if you want to mine for gold and you just go in a random spot and start mining there could be animal homes there trying to survive when you are just ruining their home. So that is why miners should stay in one spot only, instead of blowing up the entire environment. If we do that then we can have a safer environment and planet to live on…
Internally it poses a threat to the life and health safety of the workers and outside the mine the safety of the surrounding ecosystem is at stake. Previously the natural gas release from the coalmines was thought to be a major risk and a main waste product. The coalbed gas is now considered more hazardous and has been named as "miner's curse," because it escapes from coal seams and can ignite explosively.…
