Extra Credit Reflection This article talks about the positive and negative effects of the weight management involved in wrestling and martial arts programs. As a 125 lb. wrestler at SUNY Cortland I now a lot about the weight loss process that many wrestlers and martial arts athletes participate in. The main reason we decide to participate in this weight loss process is to gain an advantage over our opponents. After reading this article I feel that this article is pretty accurate based on my knowledge about this process. This Article talks about how wrestlers temporarily losing 5 to 10 % of their body weight in a short period of time. Doing this allows them to wrestle opponents that aren’t as big and as strong as them. This method of rapid weight loss has been proven to have many health’s related effects on your body. These negative effects have resulted in the NCAA making rules to prevent some of these negative effects that have been somewhat effective. Some negative effects of this rapid weight loss that this article discusses are that it can lead to acute cardiovascular dysfunctions, immunosuppression, lowered bone density, impaired thermoregulation, impaired cognitive function, negative mood state, hormonal unbalance, temporary growth impairment, poor nutritional status, increased injury risk, and increased risk of developing eating disorders. Unfortunately even though the NCAA was aware of these effects and was warned by American College of Sports Medicine and American Medical Association nothing was done until three athletes died. These three athletes died in 1997 from hyperthermia, which was caused by rapid weight loss. These tragic events have lead to the NCAA creating regulations on this weight loss.
