The rocking horse winner
Assigment 1. Reading Strategies & Formalist Theory
Lesson 1
The purpose of reading “The Rocking-horse Winner” is to demonstrate my understanding of the comprehension strategies studied in this lesson. I never heard about the author before; because of this I will approach my reading word by word. This is going to allow me to make connections with my own experience, create mental images and have a better understanding. Even though I never read the story before, I know this is a short story because the text doesn’t have too many pages. So this aspect makes me conclude that I will find elements such as: introduction of characters, initial conflicts, dramatic conflict, and suspense. A first glance the title suggests the adventure in the child’s mind of him and his toy: a rocking-horse with a special gift, it is a winner rocking horse.

As I started reading word by word, I made connection with the classical beginning of short stories “Once upon a time…” “There was a woman…” “The woman was beautiful, and she started full of advantages”. The connection made me bring out I was reading a story with magic content. This appears in the middle of the story, with Paul riding the rocking horse to predict the race’s winner.
On the other hand, the first paragraph describes the idea of luck several times, which made me conclude the story is going to have and ending related to gambling. This section made me think about foreshowing, because of the way it is written. Along my reading, I met Paul, the woman’s son and later I met his toy, a wood rocking horse. At this moment, I asked myself, why would the writer choose the rocking-horse to be the title of story. What is going to happen with the horse and Paul? Based in words such as: bonny, dark hair, curly hair, big eyes; I pictured Paul as a very handsome boy, with big blue eye, very mature for his age and smart. According to the first dialogue between the mother and Paul; I realized, I was at the beginning of the rising

The author starts the story like a campfire story in reference to the historical event that happened. Longfellow that lived in the past, was wiser told this story of the historical event and he also tells us about the important story of Paul’s historical event which is called the midnight ride. Also he doesn't give a whole lot of details at the beginning. In line 2 the author introduces us to Paul and his historical moment in the past, which is called the midnight ride. The historical ride of Paul revere happened on April 18, 1775. That date is when the moment of the battles of Lexington and Concord happened. This story of the historical moment was written in the year of 1860, which was in the past. In the present everyone thought that the…

In “The Lottery” there is a town that at first seems normal, but then when they conduct their yearly lottery it is revealed that they stone the winner to death. Foreshadowing is when there are pieces of text in the story hinting at the ending “The Lottery” subtly uses this technique several times. When the children are playing outside before the lottery it seemed as if it was a normal day but it’s stated that “Bobby Martin has already stuffed his pockets full of stones.”(Jackson 1 ) This seems a little unusual considering kids don’t usually stuff their pockets with stones, so this hints that they may be using stones at some point during the lottery. Secondly when they are all standing waiting for the lottery to start it states “They stood together away from the pile of stones in the corner.” (Jackson 1) This is another hint that they will be using the stones because even the adults seemed strange around them. They did not even seem comfortable standing near the stones. Finally as they are starting the lottery the crowd gets silent and nervous. The author uses foreshadowing with certain words and phrases here to change the mood of this story such as “Quiet. Wetting their lips. Not looking”. (Jackson 3) These words create an unpleasant mood that is present for the rest of the story. This change in mood helps make then ending seem as if it should be more…

“The Rocking-Horse Winner” is the story of a boy’ s gift for picking the winners of horse races. The boy, Paul, comes from a family that is always short of money. His mother seems to be more obsessed with the status that material things can provide than the environment of a loving home. Paul sees his mother’s desire for money, so he decides to take action.(Wilson) The symbolism in this story is very sexually oriented. Paul’s visciuos riding of the rocking horse expresses his desire to make money for his mother and his own sexuality. The rocking horse is his “mount” which is “forced” onwards in a “furious ride” towards “frenzy.” These descriptions are very suggestive of sexual activity. However, this is disturbing because Paul is very young yet he is participating in such acts. (Wilson)…

In D.H. Lawrence’s offsetting story The Rocking Horse Winner, there are a number of intriguing characters presented to us. None, however, are quite as thought provoking or as clearly defined as Paul’s morally culpable, denatured mother, Hester. In a story full of viscous, confusing characters, Hester is directly and indirectly characterized as being a loveless, spiteful, greedy woman, who abides to the philosophy that luck coincides with prosperity. The first indicator of Hester’s personality is found by examining her relationship with her offspring, for although she has mothered and raised multiple children it is also shown that the relationship between mother and child is anything but maternal. Her neighbours and friends praise her, for they think that “she is such a good mother. She adores her children,” (Lawrence, 307) but that she herself and her children knew that was far from the truth, because “they read it in each other’s eyes,” (307). Hester’s character can further be analyzed as you observe her relationship concerning her dependence on luck, for “it’s what causes you to have money,” (308). She is living in the constant dissatisfaction of having insufficient funds to continue on her frivolous lifestyle, despite her inability to maturely address their current financial situation. Instead, she quickly draws parallels between their financial crisis and her husband simply being “very unlucky,” (308) rather than continuing to work towards a more stable situation. On top of treating the family’s financial dilemma maturely, the greed in her that seems to be one of the key causes to their strife is outlined indirectly through the course of events that take place after she learns about the five-thousand pound grant that she will have trickled down to her over the next five years. After learning of this, she immediately goes into town to talk to their lawyer, “asking if the whole five thousand could be advanced at once,” (315). Despite…

An example of foreshadowing at the beginning of this short story is how Mrs. Fullerton talks about her husband and the fact that he left her. She mentions that "he's not old neither, you know, not old like I am". To me, this is foreshadowing because later on the young people of the community are turning their backs to her as well. They want to push her out of her house. This is significant to the ending because the idea that young people turn their backs on older people is left in the reader's head and when the parents are the party begin to speak about her, the whole…

“Thus I Refute Beelzy” by John Collier and “The Rocking Horse Winner” by D. H. Lawrence are two extraordinary short stories in which possess many significant similarities and differences. “Thus I Refute Beelzy” is about a boy named Little Simon, who talks of a character named “Mr. Beelzy” whom he plays with every afternoon in the garden. As the story progresses, the external conflict emerges when his father, Mr. Carter, ironically disapproves with his imaginative games. He therefore attempts to justify to his son that his character is not real despite Little Simon's pleads. “The rocking horse winner” is about a boy named Paul, who believes that when he rides his rocking-horse, he obtains knowledge of the winning horse in the upcoming derbies. His mother feels her family does not have enough money because she married an unlucky man. Paul consequently becomes determined to allay his mother’s discontent by betting on horses to earn money. Both authors clearly implement several vital devices by incorporating…

In reality she did not love anyone except herself. In the title it mentions a rocking horse, this was a type of metaphor throughout the story. materialistic ends will lead to happiness. In "The Rocking Horse Winner," Paul's mother, in a search for happiness, equates having "stuff" with her social status, which the author illustrates with the statement that "...[ they ] felt themselves superior to anyone in the neighborhood" (Lawrence 302). This woman wants her notoriety. "The mother had a small income, the father had a small income, but not nearly enough for the social position..." (Lawrence 302). To achieve this she needs money. To her, this equation is the solution to her happiness.…
