The novel The Sun Also Rises is one of the most widely read books written by Ernest Hemingway. It was written and published 1926. The release date of The Sun Also Rises and the author are very important, because it is a postwar novel written by an expatriate. However Ernest Hemingway and his expatriate generation were named the lost generation. His generation was shaped by their war experience. Furthermore I will analyze how the experience of world war I shaped the characters and their behavior in the novel The Sun Also Rises and how Hemingway's own experiences influenced his novel. Apart from that I think that The Sun Also Rises is a perfect portrayal of the lost generation.
First of all we have to know the life of Ernest Hemingway especially the years right before and right after world war I. Those years are very important because they were the most traumatic event for a whole generation, without the war we would have probably never had writers like Ernest Hemingway or F. Scott Fitzgerald. Basically they tried to handle their traumas with writing, specially Hemingway wrote many novels dealing with the feelings of an aimless and lost person.
The next part of my term paper reveals what the lost generation actually was about, what they felt and why they were trying to do something meaningful to make a difference. Anyway the psychological factors of the lost generation and why Hemingway perfectly fits into that group are very complex, but I will give you a few assumptions to be able to understand what it actually meant being a part of the lost generation.
The last part of my term paper will deal with the novel The Sun Also Rises and its connection to the lost generation. Right after the introduction of the novel you can see why this book is a perfect portrayal of the lost generation. However not only the fact that the protagonist and most of his friends are expatriates is important but also the emotional aspects of the characters
