Under Armour – Challenging Nike in Sports Apparel

Section 1 Under Armour has dominated the performance apparel market in recent years. They have used innovative technology and created a product that is high in quality and has gained a lot of customer support from its target industry. Their strategy of producing climate favorable, Athlete friendly, fitting sizes apparel made of moisture-wicking polyester-blend fabric ensuring high quality has been working to good effect as it has been dominating a performance apparel industry overcoming its rivals Nike and Addidas. So, their innovation and technology is their major strength. Similarly, products they introduced to the market are unique so they are going to enjoy the first mover advantage for quite a good time. This allows them to stay competitive in the industry. They have also been able to establish a very good brand image among customers. Their strategy of targeting athletes and active lifestyle has helped them to gain a lot of popularity among targeted customers. Apart from that its strength also lies on the athletic endorsements and players sponsorship. There are few weaknesses that Under Armour needs to consider. Most of the raw materials used by Under Armour are developed and manufactured by third parties. However, the company’s popularity is based on the innovation and uniqueness. So development of those materials through third party could be risky for Under Armour as they can be imitated. Similarly, when a product is unique, it has to be patented. Patents ensure protection over intellectual property. Absence of that is a weakness of the company. Weakness of Under Armour can also be pointed out by comparing its product line with its major competitors, Nike and Addidas. Nike and Addidas have huge product line. Where Under Armour provides just cleats and running shoes, Nike and Addidas provide many other accessories like soccer goalie gloves, shin guards, baseball hats etc.

    Under Armour, was founded by Kevin Plank, in 1996, one of the major sports clothing and accessories companies in all over the world. They are a supplier of a wide range of sportswear and casual apparel mainly focusing on high technology sportswear for professional athletes. Depending on the high technological and differentiated product lines, Under Armour has dramatic growth rate from 2000 to 2007. In addition, it is supplying over 100 NCAA division 1A football program and 30 NFL team, and opened self-owned retail and outlet stores in 2007. As the result, they had 43 present of the total U.S. performance apparel business sold sporting goods stores, even higher than other two main competitors which Nike and Adidas. Under Armour has 93 percent of sale in U.S. market and 84 percent of sale on apparel; plus international markets and other product lines, it totally profit 0.61 billion in 2007. By comparing with Nike and Adidas in the same year, Nike grossed 18.6 billion and Adidas 15.6 billion. The consequence, Under Armour mostly focuses on the domestic market and apparel but neglects the international market and lack diversification on their product. Although they won the sale in domestic market and apparel in this battle, their revenue was much less than Nike’s and Adidas’s which they lose in the entire market and products in sports clothing and accessories domain. Moreover, Under Armour does not have a patent on any of the materials used in its products; it creates the most critical issues, which lack of proprietary product rights. As the result, Under Armour is facing the problem on losing the international market, diversifying product lines and protection on their technology.     In 1996, as a football player at the University of Maryland, Kevin Plank grew tired of the cotton t-shirts he was provided becoming soaked with sweat and rain, impeding his ability to move fluidly as a special-teams player for the Terrapin football team. Knowing that cycling outfits and football under shorts were made with a "moisture-wicking synthetic fabric", Plank believed it possible to make a t-shirt out of such material. He observed the content label of his moisture-wicking undershorts and bought the same material from a fabric store, subsequently paying a tailor $460 to sew seven shirts using the fabric. In 1996 the special team’s captain on the university of Maryland football team got an idea. Kevin plank thought to himself “there has to be a better idea” After he graduated, he was determined to figure out something better. He wanted a shirt that stayed light and dry no matter how hot it was. After searching all around New York’s famous garment district for fabric samples, Plank finally came out with his first shirt, which he then gave to his Maryland teammates and friends who’d gone on to play in the NFL. With their feedback, he went back to work, quickly emerging with a revolutionary new T-shirt built from microfibers that wicked moisture and kept athletes cool, dry, and light. After graduation, he set out to make a superior T–shirt—one that stayed light in even the nastiest heat. After driving through the night to New York’s famous garment district for fabric samples, Plank built his first prototype, which he then gave to his Maryland teammates and friends who’d gone on to play in the NFL. With their feedback, he went back to work, quickly emerging with a revolutionary new T-shirt built from microfibers that wicked moisture and kept athletes cool, dry, and light.
