Abstract
Virginia Woolf was one of the most important novelists in the 20th century, more over, she is, when it comes to feminism, an incomparable figure at the times in England. In her essay – Three Guineas – we can see three different parts, as the title indicates. This masterpiece, published in June, 1938, is written in a form of letter. With a direct first narrator tone, the author makes the whole essay more reasonable and impressive, with a lot of questioning to the gentleman who posted the question -- How in your opinion are we to prevent war? – three years before she started her response. It deals with discrimination that exists in both education and profession, which consists of the first two parts, and to women’s education and their profession the speaker donates her first two guineas. The third part deals with gentlemen’s call for women’s help to prevent war, to which, as a matter of fact, Virginia Woolf refuses in Three Guineas. This work of hers is a great companion work to A Room of One’s Own, though it is not as popular among most readers. In my essay, we will focus on the first two parts, which are related to feminism that is demonstrated in her essay. She, in her essay, tried to answer the question – How in your opinion are we to prevent war? One that had been posted by her friend in a letter; however, in her opinion, this question itself can mean unfairness to female. Chapter one focuses on the development of Virgina Woolf’s concept of feminism and a brief introduction of Three Guineas. In Chapter two, both education and profession is discussed through analysis. Through the analysis, we see how men took charge of women’s world and how women had been feeble about their own situations and the reasons why Virginia Woolf needed to have her opinions on feminism voiced to the public. The last part is the conclusion of this thesis. Feminism is of
