Brief introduction of the outline
This presentation will begin with a real life scenario of how we choose our beloved breakfast cereal by multiple trial & error. Then, move onto the limitation of trial and error compared to DOE with a focus on large company’s perspective. Then a brief history of the first controlled experiment design will be presented to illustrate the very basic mindset of DOE. After that, based on the wave soldering case, a brief summary and analysis will be carried out and case question will be discussed. Following the case, a real experience of the presenter will be given to show how small manufacturing plant and business carry out DOE to implement quality.
Real-life scenario
How do you choose your breakfast cereal? What kind of characteristics will you judge by? Let along the disturbance of advertisement, it is the only way for us to try out different brands and flavors, shape, made, etc. And finally, by comparing all the types and brands tried, there is finally one or two are preferred. However, the time it take can be years of experience or even, life long.
In the process of manufacturing and some other scenarios such as chemical experiment, agricultural practice, clinic tests, etc. simply do not allow multiple trial and error, a model and controlled experiment is needed to analyze how variations interact with themselves and the outcome. This is the very basic mindset of DOE
History of DOE
James Lind carries out the first recorded controlled experiment in 1747, while serving as surgeon on HMS Salisbury
Lind selected 12 men from the ship, suffering from scurvy. Lind limited his subjects to men who "were as similar as I could have them", that is he provided strict entry requirements to reduce extraneous variation. He divided them into six pairs, giving each pair different supplements to their basic diet for two weeks. The treatments were all
