Food Assessment Task One

INITIAL IDEAS
Consumers are a dynamic market in the world, their needs change according to their lifestyle which ultimately affects their food choice. Consumers range from household to career driven and often cater their food choices to their lifestyle, for example, a busy athlete will consume a protein shake on the go, whereas a domestic housewife will engage in a nutritional breakfast meal such as cereal. Consumers need fast, efficient and convenient food products that suit their lifestyle while providing them with nutritional and healthy benefits to fuel their actions for the day.
A recent trend within the consumer market is busy working class citizens that do not have enough time for proper breakfast meals, therefore there has been much food product development that caters for this market, and this includes niche markets such as breakfast bars, yogurts, mini cereal boxes and liquid breakfasts.

However, such niche markets tend to overlook the nutritional value within their products, and hardly cater for the health conscious working class citizens. Therefore a liable product to introduce to this consumer market is Breakfast smoothes which are nutritional, easy, convenient and suitable for a health conscious working class citizen.

SURVEY OF INTENDED MARKET
A survey was created to assess the consumer market as to what their lifestyle is like according to their food choice and consumption. The questions were as follows:

In result of the survey, the answers provide the evidence that women and men aged from 17-35 yrs are health conscious individuals that majorly work, have busy lifestyle and have minimal time for breakfast, the consumers also prefer on- the – go products to supplement their dietary needs, and are attracted to the idea of having an on- the – go smoothie to fuel their daily duties

People from different countries and different regions have different life patterns and different sociocultures. These differences directly influence the products that industries want to produce because people may even have different attitudes and value toward the same product due to different sociocultural factors. With the rapid development of modern society and the continuous improvement of living standards, the degree of attention paid to health has increased. “Franchise businesses continue to pay close attention to their customers' need for convenience, new flavors and, yes, healthier options” (Fenwick, 2011). In analyzing the general environment of the industry, several of the six generic elements stand out among the snack and nonalcoholic beverage industry. The first considers the economic conditions and the impact it has on the industry. Realistically speaking fruit smoothies (and eating out in general) is one way a family can cut costs during tough economic times. As Jamba Juice and its immediate competitors (Planet Smoothie, Smoothie King and Juice It Up) approached the recession after the subprime crisis they were faced with lower traffic resulting in lower revenues. As fast food giants were fueling their bottom line with recession busting dollar-menus, healthy options were becoming an unaffordable luxury. Furthermore, the juice bar demographic appeals to a health conscious young woman [ (Costello) ]. While other industries (such as fast food and restaurants) are appealing to the entire family unit in their marketing endeavors. On the other hand, as baby boomers are reaching retirement age and become more focused on prolonging their life, concerns such as cholesterol and diabetes become far more important and…

The convenience trend is driven by this desire to create more leisure time. The convenience trend is driven by this desire to create more leisure time. In 2008, a Datamonitor survey found that 44% of citizens across 15 countries feel that it is difficult to manage their daily obligations and find time to relax. A Yankelovich study conducted in 2008 discovered 70% of Americans aged 16 years or older feel that they do not have the time to do all the things they need to do. In addition, 50% of Americans believe the lack of time is a bigger problem than money (Datamonitor 2009). This trend is having a dramatic influence on food preparation and consumption. Due to changing lifestyles, consumers are spending less time planning and preparing meals. A recent survey conducted by Waitrose Food and Green & Black, an organic chocolate company, found that 58% of U.K. consumers spend no more than 30 minutes cooking dinner each night (Datamonitor 2006). In addition, 60% of American consumers do not know at 4 p.m. what they will have for dinner that night, and expect to spend a total of about 30 minutes preparing, cooking and eating the meal, including clean up. Cooking at home is seen as a chore, and meal preparation is considered very time consuming. Eating alone at non-fixed mealtimes is becoming more common, as a result of changed eating habits, attitudes toward cooking, and busy lifestyles (Ahlgren 2005). Convenience is multi-faceted and will continue to evolve and converge with other trends to meet the food needs and demands of society. Convenience means more than singleserve, easy-to-prepare, and easy-to-take-away products.…
