Describe the difference between township (village) police, city police, and county police (sheriff’s office). Police officers have a limited local jurisdiction, usually within the boundaries of a city or town. They look for public safety, while they cite and arrest people who are breaking the law within their jurisdiction. They also do a lot of public services like safety education classes.
A sheriff has jurisdiction of country and state. They make their patrols outside the town and cities, although they can enter police jurisdiction as part of their jobs. The sheriff’s office acts as coroner in most cases.
On the state level, there is the highway patrol. The highway patrol has jurisdiction over the entire state. But they rarely take on the responsibilities of counties or cities. The highway patrol sticks to patrol the State’s highways provided traffic control, responding to accidents, and assisting in police chases that cross city and county lines.
Are their jurisdictions always distinct?
I would have to say that the city police jurisdictions are pretty set in stone while the county’s jurisdiction lines are kind of blurred cause the have county and city jurisdictions.
