Question 2: Select one example of a literary work or work of visual art from the 1800s—either Romantic or Realist in style—that responds in some way to the Industrial Revolution. Identify the work and the artist or writer, and explain how it responds to the Industrial Revolution. Then describe one example of how either black slaves or white abolitionists used literature or the visual arts as a form of protest against slavery.

I chose the Realist painting named “Retreat from the Storm” by Jean-François Millet 1846.

“The impending storm poses a real threat to this woman and her child, whose subsistence depends on the stray sticks of firewood they have gathered. Throughout the 1840s, the number of homeless peasants increased dramatically in France, reaching a crisis in the recession of 1847 and contributing to the fall of King Louis-Philippe in the 1848 revolution. Millet's singular image, rivalling Delacroix in its depth of emotion and Daumier in its graphic economy, probably represents Millet’s first treatment of this theme. He reworked the composition in a painting now in the Denver Art Museum.” (www.metmuseum.org)

For myself, I believe that I create a melody where there is none. In a situation as simple as a conversation, the melody is the driving force or “reason” for a composition. This reason can simply be suggested as the plot or point of the conversation. In music, even with complex and atonic compositions such as Stravinsky, it is clearly possible to listen for the repetition of a phrase or tonal quality that may help one forward through the piece of music. The crescendo and decrescendo of the music, the contrapuntal nature of complex compositions, even the division of an orchestra into sectional pieces of a song are all methodology in which to create the climax, a climax found to be stronger under the influence of a melody that does not exist until discovered. Beauty is in the “ears” of the beholder.…

    Cons Of Industrial America

During the 1800’s Industrial America was born and was expected to be the next big step in American advances because of the abundance of natural resources. These big industries that would later on be labeled as monopolies dominated the economy, thriving from the profits of their industries. The workers were paid low wages and were replaceable ranging from young boys to full grown men. The conditions of the workplaces were in terrible condition, and the owners of these industries did not provide any workers benefits. These circumstances caused tragic events and encouraged the uprising of labor unions that conducted strikes that demanded better conditions. In the documents, “Gospel of Wealth” and “Letter on Labor Industrial Society” these two important people discuss the uneven distribution of wealth and unfair treatment of the poor. People suffered in Industrial America because of the lack of government intervention and uneven distribution of wealth. During this period, the government did not have any agencies that monitored big businesses. They also did not monitor workers’ wages or the conditions in the workplace. Men were struggling to feed their families and were stripped of their needs because of low wages they received. When workers retaliated by striking, the government put more effort into harming laborers than helping them. Overall, when the people tried to retaliate, they were seen as a threat and treated like one as well. Workers had to come together to form unions that attempted to make conditions better not for only the workforce but living in that society.…

For this week's discussion I chose to focus on the importance of mentorship in nursing. This will focus on identifying the characteristics of mentors that have (or could be) most successful in recruiting and training diverse nurses and nurse faculty. At my facility me and another fellow nurse are head of our units mentoring program. This program that we have implemented focuses on the new graduated nurse and follows them through their first year of nursing. The new graduated nurse is paired up with a seasoned day shift and night shift nurse to answer any questions, facilitate a mentor-new graduate relationship and help orient the new nurse and try to build a strong, confident nurse. We routinely once a month see that the new nurse and their mentor meet to see how thing are going and see if they have any problems or concerns whether it be clinical skills, problems with other staff/physicians, prioritizing, and task management. Through this we are hoping to be able to increase morale, patient satisfaction and increase nurse retention. As new nurses enter the workforce they face a challenge going from student nurse to professional nurse. One must be prepared mentally, physically and emotionally to be a mentor and to set a productive learning environment for the new graduate.…
