According to document 5, the description written by Sook Nyul Choi in Korea between the end of WWII and 1950, Korea was actually a “victim country” for the Cold War that existed between the US and the USSR. This could be proven by the fact that people were affected negatively by these communist soldiers and weapons such as tanks and guns. The communist troops from both China and Russia not only threatened people which led to the Northern refugees to escape to Seoul, people who are “labeled” as traitors were shot with machine guns and hanged in the town square for other people to see as a bad example to not follow. Then looking at document 6a, the map shows the result of the Korean War from 1950-1953. North Korea and South Korea were being divided along the 38th parallel due to their difference in supporters and political views. These evidences shows how the Cold War made Korea into battlefields and by the Russians supporting communist in the north, and the Americans spreading capitalism in the south, this led to the Korean War. The war not only led to the division of Korea, it also caused millions of soldiers and civilians to lost lives and which destroyed the economy in both North and South…
In Document C, it comments on the map mentioning, “The war drags on for several years, finally ending in 1953 very close to the original 1950 borders.” This war was a battle between Soviet Union-supported, North Korea and US-supported, South Korea. North Korea was a communist region and South Korea believed in the rules of containment. After many years of fighting, there was barely any change to the placement of the border between them. The US worded very hard, constantly supplying South Korea with supplies, food, and weapons so they did not have to lose their land. The fact that the United States aided South Korea, so they did not have to lose any land, where North Korea could have spread communism, shows their policy of…

At that time, every mainly countries have the nuclear weapons which have the power can destroy the whole world, so the countries of each sides were be same afraid of each other. They just make many smaller political and military conflicts between each other, so sent spies for getting information and make protection for making sure their own safety. In 1949, NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is made up by many Western countries for protection the countries if Soviet Union attacked them. They are US, Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Belgium, and some small European Countries. After that, Canada also took part in the Korea War for helping US. Because of the problem between North Korea and South Korea, communism countries----China and Soviets were fighting with capitalism countries----UN, US and Canada. US didn’t want South Korea become as same as North, after WWII, they took the South Korea from Japan, of course they didn’t want to lose land. Then NORAD was coming. Because of ICBM, USA and China were worried about that, so they agreed to create to NORAD (North American Aerospace Defence Command) and built many DEW (Distance Early Warning) systems over the Arctic. As above said, Canada is really worked with USA, the reaction for communism is absolutely hostile. Canada makes many actions for protecting Capitalism and against…

While the two world powers never fought face to face, their ideological differences caused proxy wars, in which both countries would support opposing sides of a war effort as a way of competition. The Korean War was the first substantial battle between the two countries in the name of containment. Before the 1950’s invasion by the North Korean Army, Korea had been divided into two sectors; the communist North, supported by the Soviet Union, and the anti communist South, supported by the United States (Foner 715). The Truman administration sent American troops into Korea in an attempt to militarily suppress the northern invasion. Through the help of the United Nations, fifteen other countries also committed resources to the Southern Korean side.…
The Soviet Union received the area north of the 38th parallel and the US got the south. The Soviet Union established a communistic government in the north and the South was more democratic. In 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea in an attempt to reunify the country under their communist government. The US and the United Nations gave support to the South while China gave aid to the North. This attack led to war which eventually ended in a stalemate and a divided Korea. Eventually, South Korea became a wealthy trading nation and the north’s condition began to decline. By the late 1990s the South Korean government implemented the "sunshine policy" which involved peaceful cooperation with the north (Rowntree 380). The north remained hostile and detonated small nuclear bombs in 2006 and 2009. The sunshine policy was dropped in…
In 1949 the United States withdrew its occupation forces from South Korea in an effort to remove itself from a potential Civil War between North and South Korea. The United States miscalculated that North Korea would gain the support of both China and Russia in its bid to gain control of the entire Korean…
The Korean War started with communist North Korea invading anti-communist South Korea. The United States, who were already in North Korea to some extent joined forces with South Korea to help them against the North Korean invasion. They saw the Korean War as a fight against communism and felt that if North Korea was able to take over South Korea it would lead to communism spreading and taking over one area at a time until there were none left. President Truman felt it vital to get involved before it reached that point.…
When the Korean War started, North Korea got supported by the Soviet Union and the Republic of China. South Korea was supported by the United States, Great Britain, the United Nations , and lastly the Japanese. The reason why the Soviets got involved was because part of the land was controlled by them prior to the war. The United States also went into the war because they did not want to be seen as supporting communism. The United Nations got involved to stop the conflict of Korea.…
The invasion surprised the South Koreans. This advancement of the North Korean troops was considered the first military action in the Cold War. It was thought of a civil war at first. President Truman responded immediately by requesting the United Nations Security Council to intervene for the benefit of South Korea. The United States also responded by July with military troops to support South Korea in hopes that they could contain the threat and spreading of communism. The Truman Doctrine which was a policy that the United States put in place to support countries trying to free themselves of the communist threat became the rationale for the United States involvement. The United States feared that this invasion would provoke a wider war with Russia and China or possibly World War III. This idea was stated in the Domino effect theory because the theory stated if one area was influenced by communism then other areas would follow in a domino effect. Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War ended with more than 5 million soldiers and civilians losing their lives. Unfortunately, the Korean peninsula is still divided…

Stalin wanted to test America’s commitment to their policies of containment so when they responded it showed that America was willing to continue stopping communism even 4 years after World War 2. When the United States waded into the muddy waters of battle they had one goal, contain communism and uphold the democratic state which was South Korea; and they did. The war shows again commitment to the cause and doing what is needed in order to fight off the USSR’s attempts to expand communist reign. Furthermore, the justifying quality of war was the end result. After the war ended, South Korea’s government system of democracy lived. For the U.S this was an embodiment of containment and the future seemingly boded in the side of the North Atlantic Treaty…
Instead, each had dramatic advances and retreats pushing the opposition from one end of Korea to the other, eventually ending in a stalemate with both sides holding ground about the 38th Parallel. The war, however, was not solely contained in Korea and it had a large impact on both the capitalist and communist powers. Not only did it spread communism into Asia with the involvement of then communist China, it brought about the threat of a full nuclear attack between the two forces. Because of the successful spread of communism to China, the Americans felt this would cause a ‘Domino effect’ whereby the USSR would gradually turn more and more countries communist in a sort of cascade effect. The policy adopted by the then American president, Harry Truman, was to contain the spread of communism as much as possible and General Douglas MacArthur was tasked with the mission of keeping the communist forces in Korea at bay. However, as the war evolved it became increasingly difficult to gain an advance on the enemy. MacArthur then began to seriously contemplate using an Atomic bomb against the communists. If this course of action, as suggested by MacArthur, had been taken, we can be sure that not wanting to appear weaker, the USSR would have retaliated, using the Atomic bomb it had…
