Women of the Forest Essay Example
Women of the Forest- By Yolanda Murphy

Last week I officially became a wife. My new husband lives in the men's house not far from me. He is a good man. He is older than me, but a good friend to my father and my mother approved. We had met many times before so I was not surprised when he approached my parents about marriage. They approved and the following night he brought his daily kill, a wild boar, to our house. The boar solidified our marriage. After our three day period of avoidance we finally saw each other again. I think I am going to enjoy life as a wife.

Today I found out I was pregnant. My husband had been coming over to see me at the women's house at night a lot since our period of avoidance ended so I'm not surprised. He would come get me from my house and we would go to the forest to have sex before retiring for the night. Although I am pregnant there is still much to do around our village and work must go on as usual.

I have been helping the other women in my house take care of their children so I am prepared for when my baby comes. One of the other women in my kin group has taken it upon herself to teach me the taboos to avoid while I am pregnant so my child will be born healthy and strong. On my daily trips to the Rio das Tropas to bath I keep my eyes down to avoid snakes and jaguars. It is believed that if I see these animals I will become sick and my child will die. At the river I bath quickly with the others and then leave so not to see any water animals, which if seen will cause my baby to not walk properly.

My husband has gone out hunting with the other men in his house for the sacrifice tonight. While he was out hunting I cut manioc for hours in the hot sun. The women of my house are making farinha for our village to eat tonight, so we must make sure we cut enough manioc for everyone. While the women of my house are harvesting manioc another women's house is gardening. Because the men do not always return home

She relates the tribe’s unwavering piety to relay animal stories only during particular seasons, the social conventions that govern Papago interactions, and even the tribe’s attitude towards child-rearing. She discusses the lack of thanks in Papago communication and that gifts are repaid with other gifts and are…

Janet Fish is an important Realist painter born in Boston, MA, and raised on the island of Bermuda. Her early passions were for sculpture and printmaking, interests fostered by an apprenticeship with artist Byllee Lang during her youth, and the artistic endeavors of her family. She formally studied these subjects at Smith College, and went on to obtain her MFA from Yale University in 1963. While at Yale, Fish attended the Skowhegan Summer School in Maine, an experience which inspired her to move to New York to pursue a career as a painter. She concentrated on still lifes, with renewed focus on the effects of light and reflection on familiar subjects, such as fruit, flowers, and glassware. Using vivid color and masterful brushstrokes, she attempted to capture light’s movement, energy, and warmth on the canvas. In 1971, her visually rich paintings caught the eye of gallerist Jill Kornblee, who offered to represent her work. By 1982, Fish was given her first solo museum exhibition at the Delaware Museum of Art. Her paintings have since been exhibited at and become a part of the collections of a number of prestigious institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Dallas Museum of Art.…

People are this transition the “industrialization revolution” because many farmers are losing work and heading over to the city to find new work in factories. However, my wife and I stayed life was a bit hard here but there wasn’t a way we couldn’t leave our home. It’s where we grew up in. Walking through the fields was the best feeling. My wife reads the paper with tears in her eyes in one quick motion she took the paper and teared it to shreds. She held a long gaze at me and walked out. Standing all alone in the room everything silent. Had I pushed it too far? Was she mad at me forever? I pray that such an event doesn’t occur. Nicolas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s novel, Half the Sky, is primarily a call for social equality and freedom from oppression for women across the globe. The authors are actively taking the first step of achieving a global feminist movement by informing Westerners of the injustices are that are being done to women worldwide in the name of tradition and culture; they do this through personal stories and by exposing legal or cultural inequalities. As Cynthia Enloe (2004) writes in The Curious Feminist, “if something is accepted as “traditional”- inheritance passing through the male line…it can be swathed in a protective blanket, making it almost immune to bothersome questioning” (p. 2). The hopes from revealing such appalling stories and wrongs that are occurring in the world towards women are that readers will help to fix these issues by not just simply accepting them as cultural traditions. The authors certainly grasp the complexities of such issues and are undoubtedly good representatives for a global feminism movement, with emphasis on women in third world countries. Kristof and WuDunn take an approach to bound all Westerners together in a noble and rational fight for social justice through a global feminist movement; nevertheless some extreme feminists are likely to oppose the book by labeling it neoliberal with a colonialist stance that could potentially characterize non-Western women as victims. Although the authors acknowledge that Westerners across party lines generally have good intentions for women in third world countries, they write, “We sometimes think that Westerners invest too much effort in changing unjust laws and not enough in changing culture, by building schools or assisting grassroots movements.” (Kristof/WuDunn, 2009, p. 66). This concept of attempting to change cultures in third world countries (no…

During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries women were inferior of the two sexes, they were expected only to take care of the household, raise a child, cook, take care of their husband, and any other jobs that were suitable to them. However as time passed many women became interested in other fields of study such as chemistry, astronomy, biology, botany, physics, and medicine. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries women began to break the social norm as they ventured into the world of sciences, and these women were met with a variety of conflicting attitudes; both positive and negative; some people were completely against it, some men supported it, and some women supported their sex by proving themselves in their respective fields of study. Those who were against women who actively participated in scientific research were often men but also included other women. Up until then, men were nearly always seen as the dominant figure in society as opposed to women. Johann Theodor Jablonski, secretary to the Berlin Academy of Sciences, said in a letter to the Academy that he didn't believe that Maria Winkelmann should continue to work on their calendar of observations because the Academy was ridiculed for having a woman prepare its calendar (Doc 8). The men cared about what others thought of their academy and how they ran it; more so, men were embarrassed of women doing the things that men usually did. Also, when women did participate in scientific meetings and discussions, they were often met with discrimination and inequity. Samuel Pepys, an English diarist, said that when the Duchess of Newcastle was invited to a meeting of the Royal Society of Scientists, she dressed so antiquely and her behavior was so ordinary that he did not like her at all, and she did not say anything worth hearing (Doc 3). Although, Men were not the only ones who did not believe that women should study science. Marie…
