DBQ Essay- WWI

At the turn of the twentieth century, Europe seemed to enjoy a period of peace and progress. Yet below the surface, several forces were at work that would lead Europe into the “great war”. One of these forces was nationalism and it had an explosive effect in the Balkans. But, nationalism was only one of the many causes of World War I. Historians and eyewitnesses have described the causes of World War I and have tried to assess the responsibility for it. Two causes for World War I are militarism and nationalism. Militarism is when the empires use weapons and armies strength to show who is more powerful. Empires would build stronger weapons to fight other empires to show their strength. Nationalism is pride in one’s country or culture. All countries thought their best. These two causes influenced World War I.
One cause of World War I is militarism. The empires wanted to show who’s the strongest. They built a stronger military and weapons to show how strong they are. Document 1, shows how weapon prices increased in some countries. Military power is seen as a symbol of national prestige. Prestige is respect and admiration felt for someone or something on the basis of their achievement or quality. Militarism is the glorification of war by all powers. It is an arms race among great powers. In document 6, the Europeans are blamed for the start of World War I and now the mobilization of their armies for war. If one country built something, then the other countries would try to build something stronger and better. They believed in Social Darwinism. Social Darwinism is the idea that stronger nations can dominate weaker nations and spread their culture and ideas. Militarism had a great influence and was one of the causes of World War I.
Another cause of World War I is nationalism. Nationalism caused all countries to think they’re the best.it was competition between European countries. For example, the French had revenge against Germany. The French desire

    1. Yes, I believe it was right for us not to join the war because we didn’t have any provocation yet. Seeing as France had their behinds handed to them in WWI, I don’t see how the fact that they were in the war had any effect on us not joining in yet. Plus, we were out of the war area, anyway. Everything going on in Europe had nothing to do with us.…

Because of the nationalistic efforts of the Black Hand, Austria-Hungary started a war against Serbia, sparking a conflict that eventually grew to be World War I. Additionally, nationalism also influenced militarism and caused a vicious rivalry between European countries. “The next year, in an attempt to compensate for its small empire, Germany enacted the Second Naval Law, intending to build a navy capable of challenging the British Royal Navy in combat. The British responded. By 1906, keeping ahead of the Germans in modern battleships was a national priority.” (Doc D) This demonstrates the pride of Britain and Germany that fueled the arms race. Because of nationalism, the tensions between these countries increased, and eventually they caused the European nations to commit so enthusiastically to the war. Although nationalism wasn’t the sole cause of World War I, it was the most impactful one, and it ultimately led to the enormous global conflict that was the…

World War 1 or ‘The Great War’ was a conflict between the central and allied powers in 1914-1918. It took place mainly in Europe and Italy but was later expanded into France, Germany, and the South of Turkey. The causes of World War 1 are still debatable today. However, some points of the War are more important to note than others. Likewise, not only did the Serbians assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand, but the development of militarism also proves to be a main cause as well. The struggle of imperialism was correspondingly apart of the cause too because it set up the scene for other wars to take place. This is why imperialism is so substantial in history when we reference the Great War. These causes led to a world of propaganda, 8.5 million deaths, rationing of food, and higher taxes.…

World War I was an accident which was caused by bad decision-making by leaders of Great Powers. Kaiser Wilhelm II gave Austria-Hungary Germany’s unconditional support in destroying Serbia. This upset the Balance of Power among the Great Powers and threatened to undermine the influence of Russia if Serbia were to be wrecked in the localized war. This forced Russia to mobilize its troops, effectively dragging another Great Power and its allies into the conflict. Besides, it…

Of the conflicts, events, and underlying motivations that ultimately led to World War I, they can be classified as long-term factors: like that of growing imperialist aspirations, alliances forming between powers, and the isolation and alienation of Germany. There are also the more obvious, short term factors that occurred just before the outbreak of war, that we usually attribute as the cause: the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Germany’s “blank check”, and successive declarations of war.…

Nationalism was another cause of both WW1 and WW2. Nationalism is the love of ones country and both wars showed this. For example, in WW1 there was a strong competition between France, Britain, Russia, Austria- Hungry, and Germany, which was led by nationalism. For example, in June 1914 in Sarajevo, a Slavic nationalist shot and killed the Archduke Franc Ferdinand of Austria- Hungry (Doc. 3), which was the direct cause of WW1. Also nationalism led to several civil wars and the desire for "self-determination". After WW1 the Germans felt embarrassed so they supported a Nazi party that wanted to build a strong army. Italy and Japan also became more nationalistic, which led to cause WW2. WW1 and WW2 were different in that they were two different kinds of nationalism caused by two different…

The causes of the First World War (1914-1917) are, as proven by historians, exceedingly complex and a topic of great debate. For instance, some believe that Germany simply created conditions for war, while others argue her long planned war of aggression. Therefore, to assess the validity if the above statement, it's vital to consider the long-term causes of imperialism, nationalism and militarism as well the short-term origins of war from all those Great Powers.…
